Lou Gehrig

I just read that it was 70 years ago today that the old "Iron Horse", Lou Gehrig died at age 37.

He was before my time, but until Cal Ripkin broke his record, he played in 2170 consecutive baseball games.

Of course, he died of what we still call "Lou Gehrig's Disease". One of you can tell us the scientific name.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

All of a sudden, in my email inbox, I'm getting notifications of mybloggers replies and articles! Why now? I'm also getting tons of spam. What's going on?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For the first time, I played golf yesterday with a group of guys I didn't know (except one who talked me into it). It cost me $3 to join them in their game. I shot a 74 (2 over par), beat them all, and still lost my 3 bucks! They use some handicap system, supposedly for fairness/equalness, but I felt cheated. I won, but lost! Go figure.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After golf, I rototilled my garden (between rows), weeded, then went for a 2 mile jog. My back is aching and my knees hurt, but I'm a glutten for punishment. Like I said yesterday, I feel obligated to take advantage of this gorgeous June weather. Winter was too long. I may not live long enough to see July!! (And I've noticed so many people younger than I dying.) I'll walk another 6 miles or more today on the the golf course. I'll never learn.

Hmm... I never receive notifications. I did not know that was possible. Is that in the settings somewhere? Dolf--- I know what a golf bag looks like. Does that count?

See my reply to tbend. I forget how to "sign up", if ever I even did. You paint, I golf. I think I would rather have your gift.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In the beginning of his streak of consecutive games, Gehrig was on the bench. He subbed one day for the first baseman who had a headache. It was the first of those "streak" games.

It always pissed me off that a "star" player could be mired in a slump, but still plays every day. Give some young player a chance. Managers are overly optimistic the "star" will come out of his slump "anytime".

I get notifications of blogs I am subscribed to, and when people have commented on one of my posts. I don't get MyBloggers spam, don't know what that would be. I was going to tell you about ALS but I see Marta already has. Having a handicap means you are a good golfer. Don't fuss it. Or is it the $3?

It's not mybloggers spam. Something else triggered it. They always begin with my name (RANDALL), then junk. Of course, I delete them. I don't mind the 3 buck loss. It's the principle of the system--penalize the good golfer, reward the bad. It should even out, eventually (hopefully)!

I haven't had any MyBloggers spam in my e-mails but I have to go to Blogster every day to delete the spam in my knitting blog.
DH and I have to start a walking program ASAP or we won't be in shape to enjoy our vacation this year.

Good news (walking). You won't regret it.

It's odd it would start coming in for you all of a sudden like that. I have my mybloggers account set up to send me an email when someone comments on one of my posts, and when certain people post new articles (one of them is you). It automatically goes into a special folder I created in my email so it's out of the way of the regular emails, but easily available.

It's crazy. I signed up for notifications when I first joined mybloggers, but never, until just now, received anything. Suddenly, there they were! Go figure.

shucks, how do you do that? have a separate folder. I have to scroll through my 100 or so E mails that I get a day.

A two mile run after all that gardening? Whoa that is too intense.

Sometimes my brain thinks my body can do things it's not able to do. It forgets I'm 68.

I always get notifications but--so far--no spam--maybe because I am special?

That goes without saying!

Today it feels like spring weather here in the DC metro area - finally! I am excited to be out in it. I think you still won in golf, so just keep that in mind. Enjoy the outdoors!

See how lucky you are to have an outdoors job?!! If it's nice, I want to be out side.

Gary Cooper played Gehrig. Very emotional movie.

--- Tipping my baseball cap to Lou Gehrig's memory. He died of ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a tragic illness that also killed my best friend's mom. Breaks my heart....
--- I used to get mybloggers e-mail notices of posts and comments, but haven't had them for ages. Complained and complained to Eddie long ago, but he didn't do anything about it.... Oh well. Blogster's e-mail notification system doesn't work either. Facebook's system works like a charm.
--- Nice golfing! Of course, the official USGA handicap system really does work to promote fairness and fun competition between players of differing skills. Player have to honestly report their scores, of course. As a scratch player/1 handicapper at Inverness, I always was playing with players with higher USGA handicaps, and we had some really fun matches. Not sure what "system" your playing partners were using. But if you played well and had a good time, hey, just enjoy yourself. You don't have to play with them again, at least not with side bets, which can get out of hand.

Wow! I didn't know you were a "pro" golfer!! You even know the term "scratch"! I'm impressed. I suppose you don't/can't golf anymore? I'm sorry. Anyway, if it doesn't rain, I'm going to try the "choose-up again today. And thanks for the real name to Lou Gehrig's Disease.
