Good Times

I walked, jogged, and ran an average of 9 miles a day for the past 3 months (270 miles in 30 days), all for the glory of a puny 5k (3.1m) run I have just now completed (3 hours ago).

There were 75 runners of all ages and sexes, and I placed 23rd. My time (for "imaginaryfriend" Jennifer and interested others) was 26:04. I'm sure I did that last mile in less than 7'30". I was flying past runners.

I easily won my age group(65+). Afterall, at age 67, I was 13 yrs older than the oldest of the other 74. I would have won the 50-65 age group as well.

Was it worth the $20, not to mention the time and effort training? You bet! It was exhilerating! I loved every second of the run, though maybe not every second of the training. It's been a hot humid summer.

Immediately after the run, I "celebrated" by eating breakfast pancakes at the fire station fund-raiser.

My twin sisters drove 12 miles to root me on, so that was nice.

Barbara has semi-officially moved out--and in with Dad. We talked about the situation. Her "excuse" was that she didn't really know what her plans were. She wasn't sure if she could live with dad. She thinks she can, so I'm back to living alone again. I like it! Another reason for her moving is that she's much closer to her new job--organist/music director of St. Mathew Methodist Church. No 25 mile round trip every day from my house to practice or whatever. So all's well that ends well. Plus, I got a brand new bed out of it. Barb says "keep it" (we took the old bed to the dump long ago).

I'm relaxing for the rest of the day, burping up those pancakes and sausage! Have a good one, my friends.

If, as you say, your dad is moving into a retirement community, he is probably willing to endure any negatives there might be because they are temporary. Will she will stay on in his house on her own? Perhaps she likes that idea. She'll be near family but still living independently. I respect your discipline and congratulate you on your run and as for the pancakes, YES (picture a high five_. I have them at Perkins or Bob Evans about once a year.

I was with the two of them for 30' yest., and they were bickering the whole time! I can't believe they can live together, even temporarily. When he moves out, she'll take over the place as her own (paying Dad rent).
You only indulge in pancakes once a year? How can you resist?

Now you are off her diet, it probably is easier for you. I am not good at
being alone. I need conversation.

I know what you mean. I do miss the companionship. However......

Even if you were bragging (which I didn't think you were) I am all for it! It's amazing how fit you are!

Awesome Randy! My boss is a triathlete and he has struggled this year with the heat. He turned 62 in on August 4th and this is the first year it has bothered him. He is so frustrated because his run times are so dismal. I don't think it's the heat as much as the humidity, it has been smothering here this summer. He is really good....he did Ironman in 1987.

I certainly admire "ironmen" athletes. I'm just not big and strong enough. Running is my strength. But I'm proud of myself. Thanks, Nancy.

The only question remaining is- how does your Dad feel about her moving in? Congrats on the run today. I am proud of you.

Good question. I haven't talked to him about it. I think he takes the good (a cook/house keeper and general caretaker) with the bad (I won't go there). He knows it's temporary (before he moves into the retirement community building--this winter?). And thanks.

Well I am glad you found out the reason - and it's totally logical! Good for you for being oooo so fit!

Yeah--simple reasons. She just needed to explain herself, like a girl breaking up with her boyfriend. Hope I didn't sound like I was bragging about my running. Just the facts, ma'm.

Thanks Fredo. Did you ever get that "post problem" solved?

Happy you got the situation resolved with your sister. Sounds as though you really had fun this morning. You deserved those pancakes after three months of denying yourself while training.
comment by redimpala on Aug 28, 2010 8:43 AM ()
Better. Thanks for being concerned.

Now I'm thinking a couple of buffets--Chinese and pizza--will be true celebrations! Just can't get carried away. Hope you're doing okay.

I love pancakes with all that butter and syrup. Toss in a few blueberries, and yum yum. Next time I'm in Florida, we'll go out for some, Martin!

Good going, Randy. It sounds like there are a lot of good reasons for your sister to live at your dad's house, and it wasn't to do with you being hard to live with, if you are, and I'm not guessing one way or the other.

Her living with me was all supposed to be temporary anyway. Originally, she was going to build a house on the family farm. I was happy to "house" her for as long as I did, but it's nice living alone again.
