George Shearing Dies

At age 91, blind jazz pianist George Shearing is gone from this world.
I grew up with Shearing, being a favorite of my parents. He had a magical light touch, fingers dancing over the keys. Teamed with crooner Mel Torme, or anyone else for that matter, he was a delight to listen to.
I'm going to play some of his tapes today. Goodbye genius.

He had a long life and fame. He will be remembered. What more could a
guy ask than to live on through his music.

I'm sure most young folks have never heard of him, but that's okay. I haven't heard of most young "artists" (yes, in quotes!).

So many of the great talents of our generation of watching and listening are passing on. But, at 92, he lived a long and prosperous life. I hope he remained active and alert to the end.

We all have to die sometime (duh), but it still hurts to know they're gone forever. I don't think Shearing played in public for the past several years.

Like Fredo I saw him---and many jazz greats--at Birdland--he was very open to his fans--I remember he and Dave Brubik jamming together--and unforgettable evening and that was 60 years ago!

Man, how great that must have been!! I shouldn't be amazed how well he could play, being blind and all. My own father plays jazz piano with his eyes closed. His early influence was Nat Cole, although he won't admit it.

I had the honor to see him played at Birdland in NYC.in the fifties.
Also at the Berklee School where I attended at that time.
He was a gem.A big loss.But a great life.

Very fortunate, indeed. I'm impressed that you attended Berklee.

I could only wish to live until age 92. Yes, while many new stars are born, older and more familiar ones are dying.

I'm often surprised when I read a birthday age of some famous person. Are they that old already? Yes, Randy, because you are, too!
