On Foraging

I read a book recently titled "The Evolution Diet". It was about how we have changed our eating habits, and that we need to get back to eating like our early ancestors did.

Early man ate by foraging. No supermarkets back then.

I've always been a forager--nuts and berries and fruits being my prime targets. I have a freezer full of walnuts, blackberries, apple sauce, etc.

When playing golf a couple of days ago, I came across a large puffball mushroom. I picked it, took it home, sliced it up, and sauteed it in a cast iron skillet. Before eating it, I googled it, just to confirm it was the right kind (there's one kind of puffball that is deadly!). Safe! Whew! And delicious.

I was amazed at how much information there was on puffballs, recipes included. There were more mushrooms on the golf course, so I'm taking a sack to gather them up. I think they'll freeze after cooking. Yum.

Yum! I'd love to take a course on wild edibles, especially mushrooms. I have a book, but other than a few "salad weeds" I haven't been brave enough to try much. And berries, love eating wild berries off the bush! And the shocked look on people's faces when you pick a berry and eat it! (Did she just EAT that? Is it poisonous??)

My new "rage" is elderberries. I'm on the prowl.

Now I remember why I did not leave a comment when I read this. I immediately searched puffball mushrooms because I did not know that they were edible!

I doubt if Florida has any. I don't search them out like morels. If I happen to come upon one, that's enough.

I love wild strawberries. Small but mighty in flavor. More than those water filled things at the supermarket. One time I found a morel mushroom in the woods. Took it home and sauted it. Delicious. I have access to black walnuts too but they are a lot of work and very messy.

I gave up on those teeny wild strawberries down the road from me. My own are easier to pick. As for walnuts, it's a good winter time project. Patience is all that's necessary. This year is a bad one for them due to the early freeze. I'll have plenty leftover from last year. Be well.

Early man also did not have indoor plumbing and hot water and ice cream. I like what we have now.

I like all those things, too (but that's not the point).

Must we always talk about the good, bad, ugly,it is getting tiresome.
Just enjoy the food that you like and you can go forage all you want.As for me.
I do not give a damn.

Yes, I think you would do just fine if the end of the world came and you survived. I would not.

Now there's a thought. Of course, that's not why I do it.
