On Being Flabbergasted

Sunday morning--cold, windy, white (4"). Good day to stay indoors. Football games and leftover chili. Good combo.

I finally opened the jar of chili sauce that Jon(dude) gave me last October. Been saving it for my batch of chili soup I made two days ago. Mercy! Delicious. Thank you, Jon! I used ground turkey and my very own kidney beans and tomatoes. I throw in macaroni, also. That's standard for around these parts.

Went to "town" yesterday to pick up my golf clubs that were being repaired and regripped (by a friend). Don't know if that will improve my game, but I won't have to spit on my hands anymore. (golfers understand)

Went to the library and checked out 3 books. Read 50 pages of Bill Clinton's new book, "Back to Work". It's good, but I bet his back is red from constantly patting himself.
As an aside, Newt's "acceptance" speech (winning S.C.)reversed any and all opinions and positive things I last said about him. What a hypocrite! Talk about dispicable! 'Nuf said.

Here comes the "flabbergasted" part (see title). I dropped in on my father and gave him a sack of my garden food which I keep supplied (potatoes, beets, carrots, onions, etc.). He went to the cupboard and pulled out some of his "goodies"--fudge, cookies, and the like--that he gets from his retirement community (widow ladies are always baking something) to share with me. Knowing him, I said "You don't have to do that". He responded with, "I want to, and besides, you're my only son, and I love you." Exclamation marks! In all my 68 years, that's the FIRST time
I ever heard him say those words. Never to my mother, and certainly never to me! I was so stunned, I said nothing. Nice to hear. I'm still in shock.
My sisters and I have noticed he doesn't fight us or argue as much anymore. It's more "whatever". I think he realizes (esp. since he's been pretty sick recently) he's actually getting old and may die someday. So, he's criticizing us less and "letting go" of other matters, such as the farm being taken over by me and my daughter and SIL. I like my "new" father!

That's about it. Have a grand day and a glorious week!

Wow, I still have garden potatoes and squash, but the rest of my garden food is eaten or frozen. Nice way to be flabbergasted.

Heck, I'm still eating squash and sweet potatoes from 2010! I've potted cuttings from old, sprouting sweet pots, hoping they'll "take" in the garden this Spring. Isn't gardening fun?!

It is kind of sad it took him this long to say he loved you; but better now than never.

I guess it's just harder for some men to say those three little words. I've seen commercials made with that theme. I've always been determined to express them, and not just "love ya". (I use hearts here, too!)

What a nice event in your life! I was lucky enough to have most loving parents & I brought up my kids that way too. Now that my parents have gone to glory, it's so nice to hear grown kids speak their affection for their mother. As I progress I'm finding that loving gestures ( a word, a hug, or a kiss)mean more to me than money. Guess I'm just a kissey face, huggy body kind of person . . . .
P.S. My oh my - what a handsome fella you are!

Not only is my grandson handsome, so, too, am I! Or was it me you were referring to?

Silly, the word for Jon's sauce would be "delicious." The word for your Dad's saying he loved you — "wonderful."

I'll bet you were flabbergasted! Thank you, old man, for saying something Randy has needed to hear for a long time.

I'm sure my grandfather never used the "love" word. I'm glad to break to tradition.

I've learned many lessons from my father--mostly on what not to do or behave!

Have you told your dad that you love him? I think it's beyond fantastic that he finally said he loved you. Very happy for you!!!!!
comment by kristilyn3 on Jan 22, 2012 6:09 AM ()
But of course! I always leave him with those words. He just says "Okay".
