In case you haven't heard, the Indiana State Fair was dealt a blow Sat. night, when a performing stage collapsed from an "out of nowhere" 70 mph wind gust.
Five people were killed and dozens more injured. It could have been worse. The audience, waiting for a show by Sugarland, had been warned 5 minutes earlier of an approaching thunderstorm--to take cover. Suddenly, the wind virtually lifted the covered sound stage up like a parachute, then down in a heap of steel.
Indiana's Governor Mitch Daniels blamed the collapse on some "cruel and random act of Mother Nature". (no followup comment from me) The people of Indiana are in a state of shock. The fairgrounds closed all day Sunday, but will reopen today with a memorial service.
In fact, unless there's a sudden change of plans, Lynn and I are going to the fair this afternoon. We considered postponing the "date" again, but decided to "get it over with", so to speak. I'm hoping we won't be too somber. I wish I was going on a more upbeat note.
