A Test of the Emergency Broadcasting System ...

i.e., mybloggers.com. My last two articles (like "Biopsy") have not been included in the list of titles on my home page. Yet, they are still posted, and have been commented on. Is anyone out there seeing them listed, or is it just me?

As long as I'm here, I might as well write some more.

Somebody wrote me on Facebook this morning. I hardly ever pay attention, and certainly don't support or waste my time on it. But, it was a birthday wish from a high school acquaintance, which was nice. Anyway, I started reading some messages and noticed that ANYONE can read EVERYTHING other people write! It's like a huge gossip column. It confirms my belief that Facebook and Twitter are totally inane and ridiculous (I won't use the term "stupid", so not to offend anyone).

Add "texting" and IPOD use to the list of new fangled "toys", and what do we have? Answer: A society that has abandoned constructive use of valuable time. I consider a maximum of two wintertime hours on the computer enough. (Summertime, only one) But to spend hour upon hour "facebooking and twittering", etc., seems to me to deprive one of exercise, chores, outdoor recreation, and most of all, reading time.

How often I will go to the library, only to find I'm the lone person there! It's like a mauseleum! Young people don't read books anymore--maybe not even old people. They're too busy texting or whatever. I sound like my own father. He asks me, "What do you do all that time on a computer?" All he does is read and watch TV, besides walking. So I ask the same question, only with other devices.

Yesterday, for example, I got out and ran 5 miles (stopping to talk 30' with a neighbor), and later prepared a new strawberry patch, planting 4 doz. plants. That took all afternoon (no TV basketball!). Dumb me, though. That evening, I THEN read a library book chapter on planning and planting a new strawberry bed. I made some major mistakes! I don't want to start all over again, but I might. I have the time--I'm not twittering or texting!

I almost posted a rant against Facebook the other day because I got a email that our Grumpy (under his real name) had posted something on my Facebook page. So I go look and it was really dumb game called Yes-No where facebook plugs the names of your friends into stupid questions like "Would jjohn pick his nose?" and you are supposed to click on Yes or No and then I assume that sends something to him. Dumb, just dumb, and stupid. But oh ha-ha, the vast majority of facebook customers no doubt think it's the cat's pajamas.

Facebook (etc.) is fine for the young. It's just a different world from the days of pen pals and party lines. I don't want to be a fuddy-duddy, but I prefer not getting involved with the games and gossip. Mr. Grumpy? Who dat?

Wow, I was here and read this and thought I left a comment. I don't think fewer people read. I think they are just getting books either as ebooks or in stores. Barnes and Noble is always full of people.

But Borders closed down several stores in Indiana. Guess I'm old fashioned (That goes without saying!)-- I prefer a book in my lap (or over my head when I feel like napping).

I am behind in the yard and we are in that period where it is too soon for
most bedding plants because if I do it now, I will have to rush out and
cover them if we get a freeze. The only thing I have put in the ground
are knock out roses and they are super hardy. The kids put me on face book
but I never check it out. One blog is plenty. Why don't you watch movies?

I spent all afternoon yest. preparing the ground (yard) for grass seed. Pooped me out, roto-tilling, raking, etc. I can't really answer your question as to why I don't like movies (or TV shows, for that matter). Mainly, I suppose, I know it's not real. I could go on. Perhaps I'll write a post on the subject some day, and go into detail.

I adore FB, but I totally agree that it's a time sucker!!! I also can't argue that there are much better ways to spend our time. But I do love it.

Gee, I wonder why I'm not surprised?! You're young and "with it". I'm old and "out of it". At least I have a computer, even if it is "dial-up"!

I wound up with an iPod because I like to listen music while I walk and my CD player kept wearing out and also it was very big to carry. But now I just listen to NPR interviews with Terry Gross and they are fascinating and I am expanding my knowledge of the world through her truly varied guests. If I haven't updated the interviews and run out, I'll listen to my music again. Tons of stuff, all classical, of course. I am resisting Faceook. Enough is enough.

I used to try to carry around a "walkman" while I jogged, but it was a hassle. I prefer the sounds of nature. I listen to enough classical while at home.

I see all your posts listed. I really enjoy Facebook. You can set up your FB settings to control who can read your posts and block things that you don't enjoy. Tons of options. It's an essential part of political activism for my progressive causes. Expands contacts exponentially. The games are fun, too. I enjoy interacting with friends all over the world. I don't text either, but I do a ton of reading online and digitally. I'm reading four digital books right now, plus a few hardbound books. Variety is the spice of life!

You should be proud of yourself for participating in the modern way of life. I guess I'm still living the in technological stone age. But I prefer it that way. "Give me the simple life" (as the song goes).

I went to click on this post, and it wasn't listed either! Dang. Time to contact Eddie. Martin IS funny--gotta admit that!

Your 'biopsy' is listed.
Facebook is too 'busy' for me--it's for the younger kids and all the games and giving this, sending that and I have yet to find someone, anyone I knew from years gone by.
I don't text, don't own a cellphone, wouldn't know a Ipod from a pea pod so I guess I am doing okay though I will admit (shamefully) that I don't read as much as I use to.
I thought at your age you stopped celebrating birthdays?? But anyway pre HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Did you ever think you would still be around and make mistakes planting strawberries in 2011???
comment by greatmartin on Mar 20, 2011 8:20 AM ()
You covered all the bases here. Here I thought I was the Lone Ranger in not owning a cell phone (or Ipod). And yes, I plan to be gardening for another 30 years! Gee, how many colonoscopies will that be?

and yes, I did read those posts of yours. Always do.

In your account settings on FB you can select friends only, friends of friends or everyone as to who (whom?) you want to see your stuff.

Thanks, but why bother if not used.
