A Bunch of Losers

It looks like a nice day in Hoosierland. It's cool (no frost, thankfully), but sunny. I have clothes in the washer--to be hung out to dry later.

My plan is to take a short jog this morning and go for a hike this afternoon with my sister. We're going to walk along the restored section of the Wabash Canal. It's really neat. Only 15 miles away.

No football games of interest to watch today. Besides, with limited satellite options (remember, I have the cheap $15 package), I don't get ESPN, etc. That's good--no temptations.

This brings me to the point of my subject title.
I saw where my high school team (Frankfort) lost 62-0 last night. They were winless this season. They've always been lousy. I don't understand why, but it's not for me to reason.
The high school where my children went (Rossville) doesn't even have a football team (not big enough--the only public school in the state that doesn't have one!).

My "teams" are usually rotten. Indiana U. seldom has a winning season (they'll be 1-7 after today). They stink, period. Ranked 117th out of 120 in defense nationally. They had recruited the #1 quarterback in the nation, but he's backing out of his commitment (now Notre Dame?). It only gets worse.

And while my Indy Colts have won the Super Bowl, they, too are winless this year.

Add one more loser to my list. That being the Chicago Cubs. Need I say more? Pathetic is my word for them. Just like in society, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. My father warned me about this possibility 50 years ago (when I went to IU). They (and my other teams) were never good and will never get better (he said).

It's not a lot of fun rooting for losers. You get your hopes up, only to have your nose rubbed in the mud. Again and again. Time after time. Forever and ever. Yuck.
Yet, I remain optimistic!
Wait'll next year!

At least between not having ESPN and all of your "favorites" (used very loosely here) you removed temptation.

And for that, I am most grateful! Now I wish I didn't have MSNBC for your very reason.

Ok, please do NOT like the Packers or Bama then. Thank you.

School sports were supposed to be about teaching sportsmanship. The whole idea is that kids learn to interact in a competitive situation without going bananas when they lose. Graceful in defeat. Gracious in winning. Instead sports seem to teach kids how to hate losing and hate their opponents and hate hate hate. Rah Rah Rah.

On the high school level, it's not as bad as when I was a kid. Consolidation as melded the little towns into one "region", eliminating much of the animosity. But the "hate" is still prevalent at the college level.

I wonder if it takes a loser to choose a loser?

That's why you should be a Bama and a Packers fan.

I try to pick winners (like Notre Dame, from my home town of South Bend), but just when I decide to become a rooter, they start losing. Could it be a jinx?

The canal hike was great. We saw birds and animals and fish. Few humans on such a nice day. Nobody (it seems) walks anymore. I may take a walk on the golf course today--playing, of course.

The High School where I went canceled their entire football schedule about a week prior to the start of the season, didn't find out a reason though Life is a lot like sports teams, there has to be a winner and a loser..but every once in awhile karma gets involved and the "nice guy" actually ends up winning

Over the years, I've been more on the "losers" side. But that's because I usually root for the underdog, and they're underdogs for a reason! C'est la vie.
