What's a blog for, if not to complain?
I did a stupid thing two days ago.
I swabbed my left ear with a Qtip because it was itching and driving me crazy.
Consequently, I pushed a plug of wax against the eardrum, and now I can't hear very well. It was my good ear.
Called the doctor's office this morning to see if a nurse could wash the ear wax out.
No. I have to actually see the doctor. Six hours from now. Urrgghh.
It'll cost me $20 co-pay, just for my own stupidity.

On a related note, at least I can tell the doctor I will no longer be a patient of his, starting the first of the year. I'm forced to switch medicare supplement carriers. Anthem sent me a letter informing me they are discontinuing my plan. No reason given.
So I've already signed up with another company (IU Health). They have the only other doctor in my "home town" (pop 1500) under their umbrella.
It's all crazy. And for another 6 hours, I'm going to go crazy!

Hope your ear is ok. Mine have been weird ever since I wrote about the whistle and pop that came out of no where. Have not asked a doctor about that yet. I hate getting new doctors!

It was (is) such a relief to be able to hear normally again. I would not enjoy being deaf. Hope all is well with you.

MY MUM always put hot olive oil in my ear for earache and wax.Works.

The insurance companies do that. In CA they did it to my Mom when we lived there. They have a huge campaign to get people to sign up. Then, a year or two later they cancel the plans and leave the state. This is, of course, after they have made a cash killing, a great deal of which is actually Federal money for offering the plans in the first place. The worse one was a company called "Scan." They did it twice.

And my health insurance company was making money off me. $360/yr I spent for $4 worth of prescription benefits. I'm not doing it again this year, even with a new company.

I have the best solution of all. Ignore these other commenters. Instead of a Q-Tip, take a cotton ball, soak it in a solution of 50% apple juice, 50% epsom salt (after it stops bubbling). Put the soaked cotton ball into the effected ear and lay on your side with that ear up. Remain in that position for as long as it takes you to sing "The National Anthem." Make sure you sing it in key as off-key will cause the apple juice to separate from the epsom salt and you'll have to begin the process all over. Once you remove the cotton ball, check to see if there's any blood or ear wax attached or in it. If ear wax, congratulations, you've done it! If blood, call 9-1-1 & curse yourself for being dumb enough to try this.

You had me going there for a minute. My SIL says "use a candle". In any case, the doctor looked at it and the nurse washed the plug out! I CAN HEAR AGAIN!!

Never ever put Qtip in your ears.Causes damages to the canal.
Did you read the instruction on the box?it is supposed to say never used to clean out and insert in your ear.

That advice is given because many people are clumsy and they are playing it safe and want to avoid lawsuits. There is such a thing as having sensitive hands, and I have them and my skill is better than that of most doctors. I have been cleaning my ears with Q tips since I was 12 and I have never had a problem.

Sorry about your having to change doctors. For compacted ear wax I pour peroxide into the affected ear. It fizzes and bubbles and tickles, but it usually gets the job done. I also do this if I feel an ear infection coming on. It nips it in the bud.

Thanks. I actually used peroxide in my ear, but it didn't work. I've heard that peroxide (in the ear) will stop a cold in its tracks, too! Never tried that.

There's a way to relieve ear itch with a Q tip that does not push wax in. Use a circular motion against the sides of the ear drum and never a back and forth motion. Dunk Q tip in really hot water first.
