Getting High

Suzi (boots) sort of stole my thunder with her post, but I'll tag on with some thoughts of my own.

Not only is Hostess in the news, but so are energy drinks and "supplements", such as 5 Hour Energy.

You know, they're all out to kill us. If not obesity (from Twinkies), it's caffeine (from Starbucks to Red Bull), that will do us in.

Need I mention what alcohol (esp. beer) does to us? Of course cigarettes, and now legalized "maryjane" in several states can be added to the list.

Now, add unsanitary restaurant conditions and food to the potential "not good for you" list. This I saw on ABC's 20/20 last night. Disgusting and scary.

We Americans have a "What, me worry?" attitude. (Although once I wrote that, I remembered how many people rushed out to buy guns when Obama was elected in "08 for fear of new gun laws.)

Believe me, I'd love nothing better than to sit around eating doughnuts, smoking pot with a glass of wine (or Mountain Dew). But, if I plan to live to 100, I'll stick to my kale and broccoli, sweet potatoes and blueberries.

Good for you! Hostess products have been banned from my diet for a long time because of the transfats. I also shun caffeine, soda pop, and mind altering substances. Unfortunately I have a sugar addiction, which is probably as bad as any of the above.

Being a chocoholic myself, I fully empathize with your sugar addiction. It's a good thing dark chocolate is good for one's self!

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that legalization of pot will reduce the involvement of criminals. Also, j NY, I knew people who were potheads and their brains, after years of overindulgence, were damaged. A little pot now and then, as with cigarettes, and liquor, is not the problem. Making it easier will attract more users. I tried pot with some friends when I was in my 30s. I had stopped smoking a few years before. It burned my throat and I did not get high. Immune, I guess.

As liberal as I am (in most respects), I can't agree with legalizing recreational marijuana. No reason given.

The people who believe there is such a thing as "clean coal" must be the same ones who believe in no-fat Twinkies. The same ones who say "I'm okay, I can drive." The same ones who say "I can stop smoking anytime. I've done it many times."

I am reasonably disciplined when it comes to indulgences. I eat few things that are doctored to mimic real products like no fat cheese. I' rather have one portion of real brie once a year than no-fat cheese every day. My concessions are light butter for spreading, and 2 percent milk (Lactaid, actually. Skim milk is recommended, though, and that's an abomination. Might as well drink whey. I'm liberal minded but I think making pot easier to get will cause more problems than it solves. We are an indulgent society -- just look at the fast food market.

Or "one more won't hurt me". Or "And I could get killed by a truck". The power of rationalization.

I never developed a taste for Twinkies and the like. Maybe I didn't smoke enough pot - I'd get so hungry I'd eat almost anything.

I can still taste the cream filled center. But it's been a long time since I ate one.

P.S. Sorry I stole your thunder. This must be big news!

Kale and sweet potatoes are fine but who will be left to pal around with if you are the only one doing healthy things? Red wine is supposed to be good for you, right? One lone 100 year old man sitting on his porch eating blueberries.

Alone perhaps, but never lonely! I drink a half cup of red wine every day. And that's not to say I don't indulge every once in a while. Had pancakes with blackberry syrup yesterday for breakfast!

Oh I don't think you could sit around drink beer smoking... not for more than a minute anyways.

There's nothing I enjoy(ed) more than sitting in the back yard smoking my pipe--for 15 minutes! Not anymore, and I miss the "down time". But I still have my 30 minutes of wine and cheese before supper!!!

All things in moderation......except for the "maryjane". Pot doesn't agree with me.

I though that you were going to smoke a joint. Now that a New Hampshire high.

Tried it twice in my life, with no effects. Zippo. I figure I can get my high in another way.

Just wondering... is the quality of your life as important to you as Quantity? This is not a challenge-it is a question. I would gladly sacrifice a few years of my life for having a wonderful time with friends and loved ones.
comment by dragonflyby on Nov 17, 2012 8:13 AM ()
That's the whole reason for "quantity"! I love life and get so much out of it (quality), that I strive to reach for the stars (100)! I could pontificate, but I'll spare you.
