Parenting & Fatherhood

Yesterday was Fathers Day, and what happened yesterday showed me what being a father means. Yesterday morning our cat Oreo was struck and killed by an individual who did not possess the human decency to inform us of what had occured. One of our neighbors came to our door and told us the tragic news, the cat was known and loved on our block. So I got dressed and with plastic bag in hand I went to retrieve our cat. One of our other neighbors had taken the cat from the street and placed it on the grass near the sidewalk, an act I will not soon forget. I placed Oreo in the plastic bag, there was no doubt that he was dead. I took the remains and buried them near our house, and will place a marker there soon. My children were devastated, it was the first time this had happened. As I was talking to them I realized that when it comes to life & death sometimes there are no answers, and all you can do is hug them and tell them how much you love them. I told them how I had lost two dogs as a child, one by eating a pocupine and the other was struck by a car(the driver in that case didn't stop either). I knew what they were experiencing and I tried to relay that but somehow it's not the same..at least to a 9 year old that has not only lost a beloved pet, but a best friend. I came to the conclusion that with fatherhood not only comes happinesss but you also must deal with saddness that life brings.

We mourn with you and your family over the loss of your beloved pet. I have found with my children that the quickest way to get over the loss is to get a new pet to replace the one that has died. We once had a beloved dog run over by a car. Kenna cried all night. Before the next day ended, she had a new puppy to replace the one who had died. It worked wonders. Being a parent is hard!!!And it doesn't stop when they are grown. Their heartaches just get bigger.
