Mel's post about a witch made me remember this story:
Years ago when my son was a baby, I was living about 40 minutes outside of the city in a small town. I was going to college and dating a man from the city so I would travel between the 2 daily to go to school and see him. One particular Sunday, I was getting ready to go and my friend Mary called me.
When I first met Mary the town had rumored her a witch. (she did have the funky room with the lace hanging from the ceiling and strange things in bottles around) But I thought she was cool and we were fast friends.
When she called that morning, she sounded worried and said "Are you taking the baby today?" and I told her no that he was going to his Dad's for the day and I was going with my friend Darlene. So she told me okay and to be very careful.
At the time, I didn't think anything about it because she was always saying weird things and being over dramatic. But then on my way home that night I was about 20 miles out of the city when it suddenly popped in my head what she had said and almost instantly I heard a big BANG and knew my tire had just blown. I pulled over and realized, I had no cell phone and no idea how to change a flat. The wind was freezing and there was no place close so we took off walking toward a building we saw lights on. When we finally got there we convinced the cleaning lady to let us in to use the phone. We called my boyfriend and figured it would take us about the same amount of time to walk back to the car as it would be for him to drive there so we walked back out to the cold wind.
Right then a car came up and the woman driving was frantic "IS that your car on the freeway back there?" so I told her it was. She seemed relieved and said when she drove by and saw the baby seat in the back, she just was terrified some woman was out in the weather with a baby. She gave us a warm ride back to the car and we thanked her and she was on her way.
When my boyfriend showed up we started changing the tire but we could not get the lug nuts off the tire. They must have been put on with super glue because no matter what we tried, they wouldn't budge. Just when we were getting ready to just leave the car, a man and woman in a huge truck came up next to us and asked if we needed help. He actually had an air compressor on his truck!! He jumped out, hooked it up and a couple seconds later, my tire was off and the new one was on. Plus he put air in both tires.. We tried to pay him but they wouldn't have it. They said "What you give to others comes back to you."
Once I got home, I walked in the door and my phone rang. It was Mary. She immediately said "Don't tell me anything - I'm going to tell you." She then proceeded to tell me what my whole day had been like right down to what the guy and woman was wearing and the woman in the car that helped me.
I'm not sure how she knew but it was a little creepy. I for sure listened to her when she said weird things from that point on.
