Spoke Too Soon ...

We have mice in the attic... I am torn between my animal loving ways and the fact that I can't sleep at night even more now because I worry about them coming into the main part of the house. We called Orkin and they said they could put in insulation for $7,500, or put down glue traps. Glue traps would break my heart, so no dice. We called another company and they use snap traps and glue traps and some sort of food that kills the mice as well. I would rather we just not allow them in to begin with, so insulation is the answer? I don't know. We don't have the money for that though, so Ron is NOT on board.

Ah, country living.

In other news, 3 weeks until Miss Skylar is supposed to make her debut! I keep reading how first time mom's usually go past their due dates... I hope that isn't the case, I don't want her any bigger than she needs to be, if you catch my drift.

These are two areas (humane dealing of wildlife and the whole birthing process) I wish the world would come up with better solutions for. Dare to dream. Ha!

Today I am off to get a body work estimate for my brand new car. Sigh. I was driving on Tuesday and a truck coming from the other direction lost a construction cone off their vehicle and it landed right in front of my car. Awesome. I couldn't avoid hitting it. I am glad we are both ok, but it's a bummer to have to get body work done on a NEW CAR. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Happy Friday peeps.

If the mice haven't invaded the living space, you could try moth balls in the attic. It doesn't kill them, but they choose not to live around it. The risk would be that they find their way downstairs instead of outside. RVers use moth balls all the time. I've had my coach parked next to the neighbor's pasture for 10 winters now and haven't had any invaders--mice or others. Good luck.

My parents use moth balls as well. I am still holding out hope for the insulation and the sealing up entry points... we shall see. Thank you for the pointers though, always appreciated!!!

I have lots of insulation in my attic and today I noticed some of it was laying in the cover of the bathroom fan. Insulation by itself won't prevent mice - and I agree with you on glue traps. How about a cat? Mine is a great mouser, but he's with me at mom's house so the rodents are having a field day.

Is it the spray insulation with Boric Acid? THat's what they recommended to us to keep mice out... I am def open to a cat if they start coming into the house, although Tucker (Ron's dog) would need to learn that the cat is a friend.

We use live traps - it's a tin box that you bait with a little peanut butter. It holds several mice, if need be, like a little frat party in there. Then you release them far away from your house (so maybe they won't find their way back). We throw them in the river and they have the opportunity to find their way to shore. This is the only way I could deal with it - can't stand to look at them dead in a snap trap. Glue traps are not the thing at all.

Trying to seal up the house to keep them out is a lot of expense and work and no guarantees, because they can squeeze under doors if they want to, and they want to. Good luck.

I know they have their ways of getting in. The Orkin man pointed out 3 different entry points, Ron went and tried to seal them but I do not have any faith that it will keep them out. If Orkin comes and seals it up after they redo the anti bug/rodent insulation, then I will have some hope!

hah! dakota came right on his due date! and i was not in labor for days either! 7 hours from start to finish, not hard labor for 7 hours. I guess you don't want to hear about my solution to our mice problem we had. Mr. Lucky Cat.

Oddly I am not anti cat for controlling the mice issue. I don't think it would be right to leave the cat in the attic, but if the mice ever came into the house part I really might consider it. Cats and mice are all a part of the natural food chain, and the mice could always run away, out of the house, and never look back again! To me that seems fair. It's not like putting a mouse in a snake aquarium. That to me is totally uncool.

Good luck with baby! You could seek out those spicy, labor inducing salads I've heard rumors about. No seriously.
And there's got to be a way to trap the mice in a cage filled with food that you can humanely carry them out of your house.
You're right, there's gotta be a better way than glue traps. Glue traps should just be for flies and roaches, not mammals.

I AGREE about the glue traps! I can't fathom people using them, especially removing them. As much as I do not want them in my house I can't support those traps. In other news, I am swaying Ron towards the insulation............. I hope.

We are still trying to figure out the best way. It leaves me very anxious at night and it's hard to sleep... but hopefully soon they will be gone.

Perhaps you should call the Pied Piper of Hamelin...he can lure the mice away with his music.

When I saw this in my email I laughed, a much needed laugh, so thank you for that.

My first was five days early. My second was five days early, so when my third was five days late I felt like she was actually ten days late.
