Not My Normal Type Post But I Found it Interesting

I got this in my email today and I was glad to be reminded of the purpose of the creatures that scare me, so I thought I would share.

Dear Kristy,

Each year at this time, some wildlife get a “bat” rap. But, as it turns out, critters like spiders, owls and bats can be quite beneficial to your backyard habitat. Read on….

Owls. Welcome these silent, stealthy hunters to
your yard and they’ll provide superior rodent
control, as well as fill your yard with their
hauntingly beautiful hooting. Old trees are a
favorite habitat of owls, but an owl nesting box
can work just as well.

Spiders. Though they may strike fear in the hearts of many, you really shouldn’t fear them unless you are a garden pest. Spiders will protect your beautiful yard from plant eating insects and protect you from annoying bugs like mosquitoes. Thank them by putting down thick mulch for them to hide and spend the winter in.

Toads. These helpful hoppers are often associated with witches in folklore. Welcome your friendly neighborhood toad to your yard and he’ll thank you by eating up to 10,000 insect pests over the course of an average summer. You can purchase a “toad abode” or simply half-bury a ceramic pot in your yard to attract these helpful amphibians.

Snakes. They may never live down their scary reputation, but many snakes can be a big help in the garden. Harmless species like garter snakes prefer cool, dark places to hide to prey on insects, slugs and even rodents.

Bats. Did you know all 40 species of bats in the United States are beneficial to people? Most feed on insect pests and some even help in pollination. A bat house placed 12-15 feet off the ground can entice these flying friends to take up residence in your yard.

Happy Thursday!

This reminds me that I haven't heard the owl up in our woods for a long time. Hope some new ones move in.

no one is allowed to kill spiders around me! besides they make some really cool webs. i am not a fan of snakes though!

Oh, see I hate hate hate spiders and if they are in the house, I tell them that they must die. If they are outside I prefer if they hide when I appear...

Hurrah! I burn at people killing these great creatures in abhorance to their "sliminess" or "vampire" status, or whatever other reasons they have for hating them.

You are a noble man. I am not a fan of many of these but it is nice to be reminded of their purpose...

bats are kinda scary when you have long hair they can get trapped in, although I am sure they feel the same about the long haired humans.

I have (at least) two toads in the basement. The larger being a good 6 inches in length. They particular prefer the place when the water rises above floor-level, which happens all too often. I don't know where they go for the winter, but since I didn't bring them in, I figure they can figure out what to to and were to go. There are places down there to hibernate if that's what they do.

I love Frogs and Toads. I am glad that you let them enjoy your basement!

An owl eats kittens and small dogs. Their hoot is lovely but keep pets away
from them.

Really! I didn't know that. I guess my 95 pound Kraymer would be safe though.
