Is it Me or is it Wal-mart?

Ok, so I went to Wal-mart to buy groceries for the month (except meat). I know the pros and cons of this behavior, but as the saying goes, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I was in the produce department and noticed that green bell peppers were $1.88. Too much! Peppers weren't on the list, but I buy them when the price is right. Then I noticed that red peppers were $1.68. That isn't cheap, but peppers for a change would be nice, so I picked four small(ish) ones that would make a meal for the two of us.

I didn't get to check the receipt on the way out, so when I got home I found that I had been charged for 4 @ $1.68 each for a total of $6.72 for 4 peppers. I had never seen peppers sold by the piece before, so I called customer service.

The (not so) nice customer service lady said right away that the pricing was correct. As soon as I began to object, she stated that "we've been dealing with this all week"! Huh? Than why hasn't somebody "fixed" it?

Nice of her to confirm that it wasn't just me who took exception to this pricing policy. Then she told me that "you really need to read the signs"! which implied to me that Wal-mart will screw me if I give them the opportunity.

She put somebody else on the line--turned out to be Randy, an assistant manager--and without hesitation he told me to bring my receipt in and I'd get a refund!

I was speechless! "Don't you need to write something down"? I asked.

"Why is that sir?"

So, I thanked him and I'll bring my receipt in next week, but that still leaves a major issue. This isn't the first time I received (or at least expect to) receive compensation by complaining! But what of the more timid folks (like Donna, but don't tell her I said so) who don't pick up the phone and bitch?

The corporate attitude seems (in some cases) to be, "We'll screw you if you let us".

Well, I for one won't let them if I can help it. And I'll help other people avoid getting screwed when I can.

On a more pleasant note: By next week the temperature is supposed to break freezing on most days. I can wash the truck when I please. This, to me, is the beginning of spring! The worst is over, even tho the 4 inches of liquid contained in the snow-pak has to go somewhere. Hopefully it will melt slowly!

Oh, and one other thing... If it's warmer than 40 where you are, do me a kindness and don't mention it!

This is truly upsetting. I've noticed some of the prices are by the pound and others are per piece. Frustrating.

Everybody's doing it and it's frustrating. They're messing with the "rules" and only the hypervigilant catch it. My wife and I just bought tile by the foot.

Did you also notice that other measurements have also been tampered with recently? Most significant is floor covering. All the add talk about sq ft now. "Only 99 cents per square foot!" Only? LOL That's 9 dollars a square yard.

Why didn't you just return them? I looked at my bill one day before leaving and saw the price I had been charged for peppers, so I just went back and returned them. I had never done a thing like that before, but PEPPERS?

I had already gotten home that day and the peppers would have been too old to return a week later. But the assistant manager returned my money anyway and we ate the peppers, so it turned out Ok.

Thanks for the reminder to check receipts and watch the scanner. Once I actually took with me to the store a magic marker so as the item was scanned I'd also check the item and what I put down. Might have to do that again, I buy for 2 weeks so there is too much in the basket for our family of 3 to remember every item priced.

Green peppers are always cheaper than the red or yellow. I would have been suspicious right away. I despise Walmart and will pay a little more for something rather than shop there. I think I would have had to call the store manager and complain about the customer service person. She was extremely rude.

I was suspicious! I looked more than once, put never thought to look for lb or ea. I figured that since there were only a handful of red left that they were on sale and moving out fast. The thing that bothered me most is that I purpose chose smallish ones. Had I known it was each, I might have grabbed 2 big ones instead of 4 small ones. Two big ones would have been $3 and change, which is what I expected to spend by weight for the 4.

I am just now running out of the peppers that I had chopped and frozen.
The pepper plant flourished well into the fall. I detest Walmart and only
go when I just have to in order to find what I want. They almost always
have one of everything.

We used to have a Great American in Delhi. It's a franchise in the northeast, I believe. Now all we have left is Price Chopper, and their prices were never good. I buy sale items and that's about it. I prefer to shop local when possible, like hardware, but we're stuck with Wal-mart for groceries.

I have learned to check all receipts especially from grocery stores--seriously 98% of the time I find mistakes--in the store's favor. Also another for overcharging--credit card and phone bills!

Usually I look over the receipt as I'm walking out or when I get into the truck. This time the truck was pulled up in the fire lane and I was in a hurry and #### happens, and I didn't look until I got home.

It was amazing how the assistant manager was able to shut me up.

they always try to screw you if they can. We've tried to support the local merchants & farmers over the big box stores. But sometimes you ahve to shop with them (just like you said).

We get produce form the local farmer's market during the summer. Unfortunately our growing season is so short that it's only available for barely 3 months.

Some of there produce, cukes for one, are no bargain either!

Oh you know how I feel about Wal Mart. I was thinking $1.88 was cheap though!!! Per pound of course, not per pepper...
comment by kristilyn3 on Feb 11, 2011 12:22 PM ()
I know exactly how you feel about Wal-mart. I was thinking of you when I wrote the second sentence!
reply by jjoohhnn on Feb 13, 2011 2:55 PM ()
Thanks for telling it like it is. I rarely get to Wal-Mart but I do like it for some things (not produce, though). I write letters of complaint all the time and the most hilarious part is that when I complain about a really bad product, badly designed, badly produced, they sometimes send me ANOTHER ONE.

I had that experience in the 80s when food tampering was big. I found a thumb tack in a generic Twinkie. Might have been put there by a co-worker, but the company investigated even tho they denied involvement and eventually a rep came by with 2 large bags of cakes and bread!

I've saved myself and others big buck by telling it how it should be! Propane companies are big at lowering the gallon price if you complain. I am in the process of assisting a few elderly tenants at a trailer park with a complaint about property tax credit. Turns out that the owner was also charging more than the allowable 5% late fee on lot rent, so she'll be hearing about that too from the State. I find this sort of thing empowering, and the more success I have, the more I do!

yes, someone screwed up.Normally pepper sells single.
If there was a group of peppers, these are put in a plastic bag.
You had the right to ##### and someone should have caught this.
for me I would have told the cashier that do not need it.
Peppers are very expensive.Depending on the color

Hopefully I'll get my $$ on Wednesday and all will be well (for now with Walmart).
