Words to Live By

Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, Pardon, Where there is doubt, faith,
where there is despair, hope where there is darkness, light, and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console, To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love, for it is in giving that we receive,It is in pardoning
that we are pardoned.

These words are by St. Francis of Assisi and I wish that I had
a statue of him in my back yard engraved with these words to
remind me every day to aspire to more.

My mother has a print out of those words hanging in her kitchen for the same reasons you would like a statue. I can walk into her house, all fired up about something or other and there they are...talking me back down again.

These words seem to resonate with everyone. Glad to see you have come
home to us again.

Good words for 9-11 memories. It's difficult for me to watch the tapes.

My mother had a statue of him to put in the yard, and I don't know what happened to it. She was going to make a little house for him to live in next to a sun dial and make a flower garden outside her sewing room window where she could see it while she sewed. Now St. Francis is AWOL and there is that huge ugly propane tank sitting in her little garden area. Everyone says paint it to look like an animal or something - what a dumb idea - then it'll just be some stupid big ugly tank painted to look like some stupid animal that isn't even indigenous to the area. No way is it ever going to fit into the scenery and not look like what it is: a 500 gallon propane tank. Painted, it'll be like lipstick on a pig - still a pig and more embarrassing for the attempt to make something out of it. Just sayin'.

I planted honeysuckle around my propane tank when we lived on the farm. It
was still B and U. I saw the most wonderful little statue of St. Francis
in Santa Fe. Wish I had it.

Beautiful words. I carried the words of St. Frances with me all of the years that I was a social worker- both stanzas. I have a statue of him in my bedroom and in my yard.

The image of a statue in Santa Fe lingers in my mind. I just keep longing
for something similar.
