Texas in Extremis

I just finished reading the account of hurricane Ike on the computer and how it has ravished Galveston and Houston. Both are cities that we love and have enjoyed frequently. The boundaries between Oklahoma and Texas are blurred and as people, we feel close to each other. The exception being football season of course.

I am so sorry for the misery and devastation. There will be an opportunity to help through various agencies I am sure and we will certainly do so. I am sure that our shelters are full already just as they are in Dallas and the inland parts of Texas. While not as severe as Katrina, it is closer to home. I worry a lot about my cousin, Virginia and her husband, Tom. Tom is well into his eighties and feeling it. I can't get them on the phone, but know they would feel free to come here. They live in Victoria which is a ways from Houston. We should know more tomorrow.

It seemed to have hit pretty hard. I hope they are okay...

Galveston looks completely devastated. How terrible. My heart goes out to those folks and I will no doubt donate too. I am waiting to see who offers disaster relief. So far, the McCormick Foundation appears to be the first agency on line accepting donations but I'm sure there will be others.

My friend, Jan (former New York ballet teacher) left New Orleans and started teaching at a college in Missouri after Katrina. She finished some courses there and moved to Dallas (I still haven't heard what lured her to Dallas). I am thinking that about now she would like to move north, way north.

Another nightmare. We're getting pounded by rain from Ike again today.

I can imagine the decision to leave or stick it out must be a very wrenching one for people to make. I'm not sure what I'd do under those circumstances.

Glad that most of the people left before it came.
There were some there waiting it out.
Not sure how they made out. Will wait to hear more on the news.

If the TV pictures are any indication, Ike was devastating. Looks like we'll get the rain remnants in Indiana. It's already breezy. Hang on!
