Fraud Alert

In these days of a worsening economy there is bound to be more petty crime. We just had a call from Chase asking Ted if he had received his new business card. He has never applied for one. He has a Chase military card for use at the Tinker Club. Naturally all of the alarm bells went off in our heads. I had been a victim of credit card fraud some years ago and it took me forever to get it cleared up.
We were appalled. After an hour and a half on the phone with Chase, I was still unable to get this cleared up. The last resort was to put a fraud alert on Equifax which would be sent to the other credit bureaus.

We can't imagine how the perpetrator got the necessary information. All sensitive paper goes directly to the fireplace and is burned. I guess we must all be super-vigilant.

Stores that debit your checking account and then hand you back your check, as many of ours do are part of the problem of identity theft. I have been diligent about destroying those checks. Our bank employees constantly turn over and many of them are not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Unfortunately, I think we can see more of this kind of thing since necessities such as food and gasoline have gone through the roof. I read a very gloomy forecast in the paper yesterday. It predicted a very slow turn around in the economy.

It is one of those things where no matter how much you try to address it and think it's fixed, you'll always worry about it.

In this era of information dissemination and hackers, etc. it is getting really bad... Sometimes things happen that you don't even know. Other times, I guess there are safeguards... like being vigilant.

I can't believe Chase didn't work with you! That's not good business practice. Hope it doesn't go any farther than this.

What I don't like aside from what's been mentioned is how they ask for the 3-digit code on the back of the card for telephone or online orders. Then the employee has all the info needed to use the card just as the legitimate oner did. There were also guests when I had the motel who refused to sign the back of their card. Some people don't realize how foolish this is, although these days, the cashier at most in-person places doesn't see the sig on the card.

One of my biggest fears. It's happened to my sister and a daughter.

Once Ed received an E mail asking him to confirm the new address (somewhere in Virginia) for his stock mailings. We were living in NY. Meanwhile, never use a debit card for purchases. That is one of the quickest ways to be scammed. Use a credit card. If you don't overspend and pay it off each month, there is no interest. I did this for years on my own. I remember confounding one credit card guy on the phone who was trying to get me to get a new card with a low rate. Irrelevant, I said, I never pay any interest.
