Smart Phone Addiction

What did people do before they came along? I think it is
unbearably rude to go to a social function and play with
your smart phone instead of conversing. Think of the impact
on the art of conversation.

The band banquet that I went to on Friday night is a case in
point. Our table consisted of Ellie, Adrienne, Dakota,
Shepherd and Dakota's mother. I, of course just have a
cheapie little phone that does not get on the internet. Every
person at the table but me played with their phones after
we ate until the program started.

Am I so behind the times because I do not feel the need to
be connected to the internet at all times? I waste enough
time on the computer as it is and relish having a human to
talk with. My sister says that her children and grandchildren
are the same. She feels lucky just to get a few sentences
out of them.

Adrienne and Shepherd both got awards for outstanding
band students.

It was interesting to observe the various fashions. There
were a lot of the high-low dresses...one was worn with cow
boy boots...NO! NO! and one memorable shiny white dress on
an obese girl that ended at crotch level. She should
have worn tights with it. Ellie swore that she was not
wearing panties.

I have a tablet that I use all day, turning the computer on only after dinner. Saves a bundle on electricity. I don't consider myself addicted because it doesn't interfere with what needs to be done. Nor do I consider it time wasted. I don't do "nothing". When I run out of things to do that have value to me I put the droid down and go on to other things. We went to lunch today and neither of us brought our droids with us. Part of the reason for going to this particular place on Tuesdays is to talk to people.

You are able to use your tablet constructively. Good for you!!

I am with you! I have a smart phone, but what happened to talking? Text messages do not touch or convey body language.

The exchange of ideas and witticisms may be going out of style. I have been
told that this is a new world and I need to get over it but I won't. It
still is rude to me, I love people.

Sounds like an interesting evening for you! And yes, I too am guilty of cell phone addiction these days... I'm trying to break away but it's haaaaard....

You are soon going to be too busy for your cell phone. I have a new
great grandaughter. She has lots of wavy black hair and I don't know how
Sara is going to cope with two so close together.

Yes, I don't share the love of smartphones. Those videos where kids don't know how to use the old phones are great: https://youtu.be/XkuirEweZvM

I will have to see that video.

I consider myself fortunate to have grown up without technology in that research shows that children's brains develop differently when they are glued to a device. I was 20 before my father bought us a television set. I grew up with radio -- it challenges the imagination causing one to invent visuals. I'll never forget when mini skirts came in and and women who weighed 250 lbs. thought it was okay to have thighs showing.

This girl was a sight. The old radio programs did allow you to make up
your own visuals, just as reading does. I especially loved the old Lux
theater.

Saw a piece on TV that tested cell phones for vermin and phones, because of where we put them, leave them, etc., were dirtier than toilet seats!

I am not surprised. I hate being a cranky old woman but I think it is
very rude to disconnect from those around you.
