The Return of the Old Trunk

First of all, let me say that I love history. I have always
cherished old things and wish they could tell me the stories
of where they had been and who owned them. I spent a year
living at Fort Belvoir, Virginia during the Korean War and
every Sunday that was possible, we spent looking at the
historic homes in the area. It served to deepen my love for
antiques.

Several years later, an old friend of the family asked me to
go get her old camel back trunk out of her cellar. She was
getting ready to sell her home and neither of her twin
daughters wanted this homely old trunk. She had brought it
as a bride when she came to Oklahoma.

I rescued it, cleaned it up and painted it and have used it
to this day to store linens and bedding.

As fate would have it, my niece married into the family and
had two children. I offered her the trunk but she didn't
view it as a family treasure. My grand niece, Kristen,
called recently and asked me if I would give it to her because she had nothing from her grandmother or her great
grandmother. I am thrilled to be able to return it to
its original family. It is from the Victorian Empire period
and has the original picture in the lid. I never had it
fully restored but I know a man who does it beautifully and
I will put her in touch with him.

Kristen was not fortunate enough to have known her great
grandmother, who was a strong pioneer woman but I remember
her well and can share my stories and memories with Kristen.
Life comes full circle sometimes doesn't it.

It is wonderful that Kristen wants the trunk. If it is the only thing she has of her mother and grandmother, then she will cherish it.

I'm so happy to hear it is going to someone who will treasure it! I have very few things from any of my grandparents but what I do have, I cherish. I know she will too.

THAT is very cool, I love it. I have some things from the Grandparents, actually one Grandmother, and I cherish them. There is a watch and a perfume bottle.

Your trunk sounds like the one my niece is getting. I guess they were
the luggage of the time and nearly indestructible to have lasted all these
years.

You were the steward of the trunk. My mother used to collect those trunks because people were getting rid of them. I still have three.

They are beautiful when lined and re-done.

Thank you, I felt that I needed to share the story.

One of those "news" stories on the radio yesterday morning was about a junk deal who picked up a trunk along with other stuff and returned to the owner savings bonds he found inside worth 112K. Best deal I ever got was finding a 20 in the pocked of a raincoat I picked up at a thrift shop in a church basement. Gotta wonder if the person who donated the coat didn't but the cash ere on purpose.

It was an honest man who returned the savings bonds. I always feel
disappointed in people who have bought a treasure for a quarter and don't
split with the original owner.

What a lovely story. Your sense of history and intervention have made it possible for Kristen to have something from her past.

It gives me a warm feeling to know that family will cherish this piece of
the family history.
