I have a small Victorian chair that I have always loved but it is very low and has suffered abuse in it's life time. It's last refinishing was a disaster. I wanted it in front
of my vanity to sit on while I do my makeup. I decided to
paint it white and then have it reupholstered. I have two coats on it and it looks fine to me but Ted is constantly criticizing what a mess I am making of it. I am vizualizing
it in a blue fabric..perhaps a printed velvet. I also
have a wing chair I want recovered.

I think it is unfair for husbands to criticise their wives creative efforts especially when they always like the end
result.

We get two free trips to the dump and I have lots of things
that I want to take. Ted seems to cherish these objects and
when I try to part him from them he hangs on to them for
dear life. What use could he possibly have for broken blinds, three legged pot holders and a squirrel cage out of
an old water cooler?

Men must truly be from Mars!

To answer your question -- this being later life and I, having paid my dues as a 50s wife, refuse to cook more than one meal a day unless it is my whim or a special occasion. No one cooks for me. What am I? A short order cook? In New York, I was going out the door to a ballet class and Ed says, "What about lunch?" I answered, "I married you for better or worse, but not for lunch." I do my bit by constantly cleaning up after. I think doing all the other stuff merits me a break from constant cookery and servery. (I made that up.)

Well, you know I can't hold a paint brush properly, as Gary finally told me a couple of summers ago. Did it crush me? No, I posted about it on MyBloggers. Hah!

So that is what is wrong with our painting! I am perfectly satisfied with my chair.

A mess because it is painted vs. stripped and varnished? Sometimes it is not about restoring furniture, but about making it suit our styles and creative bends. I suspect had Ted taken the time to refinished
for you, he would not be criticizing now. That will teach him!

I really like the chair white and he will too once he sees it upholstered.

What I have observed is that criticism in a relationship is often a double standard. Whenever I am dismayed at something Ed is doing and mention it, he retreats into a 14-year-old pout that may last two days. But he thinks nothing of second-guessing my solutions. (P.S. He burned our Calphalon fry pan today beyond repair because he was making his breakfast and allowing himself to be distracted by Steve, aces handyman. I was a model of understanding. I was babying that pan, I tell you. But, hey, the alternative is for me to make his breakfast. Forget it.

Please tell me how you get by without cooking breakfast or lunch? Sorry
about the pan.
