Oklahoma City sprawls all over the place and for a time there
was nothing at all downtown to bother with. A progressive
mayor has changed all that.
First of all, a clutch of slums were cleared and the South
Canadian river was renamed the Oklahoma River. There is now
a water way where boat races are held and one can take a
water taxi. The industrial part was rechristened brick town
about thirty years ago and is now thriving with luxury hotels.
Trendy restaurants sprang up, a baseball field and a Bass
Pro Shop all topped with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The old Double Deuce area is being cleared now and condos are
being erected so that people can live where it is all happening if they choose to.
The downside is that it is hard to get a parking place. We
haven't had the unemployment or the hard times that other
cities have had. We do have a great symphony orchestra,
Broadway plays come to town and we are near three major
Universities. Our major art museum downtown is wonderful.
I care not about the Oklahoma City Thunder but it has been
a major drawing card for us.
I love Oklahoma and Texas fervently even though the summers
are beastly hot. I hate that ultra conservative mindset
that most people here have but most of us are helpful and
good to each other. I have never had car trouble that someone has not stopped to help me.
Our next step should be good, cheap, available public
transportation.
