Musing on Several Things

Yesterday, Ted had an appointment with the Indian Clinic in
Shawnee. His doctor is young and he is determined to reach
a diagnosis before the V. A. does. Ted is a lot more cheerful now that he has two doctors working on his problem.

I always enjoy the Indian Clinic because you see so many
people who look as though they just stepped out of a
painting. Some of the men still wear the long braid and
they look so handsome. I saw a girl that was the epitome
of an Indian Princess. I imagined how she would look in white buckskin.

Native Americans have gotten such a raw deal. Now they are making pots of money with their casinos and I am glad. They are putting the money in the right place taking care
of their elderly, building houses for those who need them
and renovating homes for the elderly when they need to stay
in their homes. Ted is 3/l6 Cherokee and probably more
because at one time Native Americans could not own property
unless they were half white. He thinks his grandfather
lied so that he could have his own farm.

The white man's diet has been almost as bad as alcohol in the way it has affected Indian Health. Diabetes is rampant
and so is morbid obesity.

Native Americans are people of few words as a rule. The
children are taught to be passive. When I was going from
school to school doing psycho-educational testing, their
teachers were always surprised at how high the children
scored. They made no allowances for their culture.

There appears to be a genetic link to artistic ability also. Ted's mother did beautiful hand sewing and painting
and Ted and his brothers are very creative. Ted carves
and paints when he feels well.

I picked up a brochure while I was waiting on behavioral
health. It was interesting to see that they said that
tales of injustice were told and retold to every generation
so that they were hampered in their ability to cope with
society.

The Florida Seminoles are extremely wealthy these days but diabetes, alcoholism and drug addiction are rampant. Not a single family has not lost one more members to these afflictions. White people and others continue to take advantage of, and leach off the Seminoles. It is sad to see.

What we did to the Indians was unbelievable. The black race thinks they have been so discriminated against but so have the Indians even more so. The difference between the two is the blacks had a leader like Martin Luther King to rally for them and the Indians have not had a leader like that.

We did horrendous things to the Indians. They were here first. I think slaughtering the buffalo was the worst because it was food and shelter for them and they were starving and had to accept our terms. Now many of them live on starchy commodities and our diet is not right for them.

The culture is fascinating and so is the art work. Don't get too frisky
now that you are having all that sun.

I have heard recently that no history is without its misconceptions and that the Indians perpetrated vicious atrocities as well as the settlers. All that on the side, I admire the Indian culture. My late husband was part Iroquois and you could see it in his cheekbones. Hope Ted hears something hopeful soon.

The Comanche tribe was the worst. My Family came from North Carolina by boat to Gonzales, Texas in l850. They set up a plantation on the Guadalupe
river. There was never a family story about the Indian raids and it must have been something they worried about. The attacks were terrible in Texas with scalping and looting and taking prisoners. We have a lot to feel guilty about because we pushed them out of their land and destroyed
their food source. Blacks have not suffered as much as the Native Americans.

I think it would be cool to live as a native American for a year or so. They just seem so earth friendly - at least the Indians I think of. It's a shame what we did to them back then and now - esp if they have adopted our diets and ways...

I think so too. I had a much loved aunt who was half Native American.
