Exploitation

Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company has contracted with a Nevada firm to remove some of the large trees in our addition that get tangled up in their power lines. The
company is using Mexican labor. Some of them speak enough
English to be understood.

Guess what these men who work very hard and do dangerous work get paid? Three dollars an hour. This makes me so
mad to think of the exorbitant price O.G.&E is paying and
that the Nevada firm is getting because they are paying
less than half the minimum wage. A man can work all day in
the heat and humidity and only take home 24 dollars. It
is risky work too. They have to dangle from branches and use huge chain saws to get through these trees that have been planted in the sixties.

I became aware of this when they started removing trees
from my son's backyard. I only can only hope that the
company is housing and feeding them while they are here but
I bet they picked up their cheap labor here.

Greed knows no bounds.

Common stereotype is that "Mexicans" are used to the sun and heat--it doesn't bother them. Wrong! I remember my grandmother's hired Mexicans picking tomatoes (60 years ago). Miserable work.

We heard them talking when we were out on the patio and they were preparing
to take down 2 trees in Bobby's yard.
I can tell you how hot and miserable it is because I bought five plants and
had to get them in the ground before it started to rain again even though
it was in the noon day heat. I couldn't wait to get under the air conditioner.

It sucks bigtime. I feel for them too. I imagine that their wives have to work cleaning houses because Ellie has one school in that area and she
says they are latch key kids.

I am concerned with the morality and the inhumanity more than anything else.

Same question as Kristy: How gave out this info on pay? It would take some really creative bookkeeping to pull that off on a regular basis.

We overheard them talking about how much they were being paid in English.
You can bet they were illegals picked up here. I don;t know how business
handles it but all the roofers and concrete workers are Mexican and there
is a section in Oklahoma City where most of them live.

What they are doing is also illegal as heck but I am more concerned with the moral side of it. That is an awful wage to pay.

Not sure if they have any choices. They have families to feed.
