Mini Vacation

Ted and I were feeling a bit of wanderlust and since we had
to cancel the cruise we had planned because of his health,
we thought a short drive to Arkansas would be restoring.

We got a late start and stopped at Lake Tenkiller which is
the most beautiful spot in Oklahoma, about nine miles
from the Arkansas border. The foliage was green with just
a tinge of gold and it was a gorgeous drive.

We had both heard extravagant claims for the Fin and Feather
lodge and the surroundings were heavenly. Sadly, the food
was expensive, lukewarm and not very good. Our room was
tacky but we slept well and it was set in the woods.

The next morning we opted out of the breakfast buffet and
proceeded to the little town of Gore. We picked a restaurant
that was surrounded by cars and had an excellent country
breakfast. Our best meal in the whole trip.

We drove on to Van Buren, Arkansas and had a delightful
time antiquing and visiting with the other tourists.
We made a few purchases. Bling lover that I am, I got
some excellent sunglasses trimmed with Savorski crystals.
I bought a piece of folk art that I suspected was trimmed
with sterling silver and when I got it home and polished
it, my intuition was correct. It is a cross with a Mexican Madonna studded with sterling silver objects,
The wisemen, a camel etc. It is small but I think very
lovely and carefully made. Some nut had put red pencil
on her wings but I painted over it with gold and she is
restored to her former glory. I am displaying it on an
easel in our bedroom but she is going on the top of the
Christmas tree during the holidays.

I have an idea that Ted should take music lessons. I
think it may forge new connections in his brain. His
chief problem is short term memory and directions but
he is still able to socialize and our friends are
understanding.

That's wonderful that you both got away to the outdoors (and shopping!) and learning an instrument is really a great idea if he's into it. I have no musical skill but would still be interested in having an electronic keyboard to learn a few songs.

It was fun and I missed hiking around the lake like we used to do but
Ted can't do it any more. Van Buren is a quaint little place and fun to
visit. We are trying the music...for sure!

I hope Baby boy has already arrived but it is probably way too early.
Good luck to both of you, I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

4C Camp for Adults had a dulcimer workshop a few years ago. I'm a guitar player, so dulcimer came easy to me, but one of the guys in the workshop is 91 and his wife (an excellent musician including dulcimer) is in her 70s. Never too late to start something new if the body cooperates.

Ted is interested in the guitar so we will get him started on that. I
love the hammer dulcimer and always enjoy that when we go to Arkansas. I
hope this works and it is certainly worth trying. The beading has been
wonderful for him.

Music is a great healer -- go for it. I have to say (being a northerner) that a drive to Arkansas and the word restoring would never occur to me in the same sentence. But I have never seen the beauties of most of the southern states, so I beg to be informed.

Arkansas is a beautiful, wooded, mountainous state and it is nice to get
away from the prairie for a while. After the Civil War, Southerners
came to Texas and Oklahoma for free land. Oklahoma, instead of being
like a midwestern state is mostly populated by people who were raised
Southern. Most of us still have Southern accents and ways. We are more
like Texans and less like people from Kansas and Colorado. Eastern
Oklahoma is beautiful but we live on flat land in the middle of the state. Music is soothing and I am serious about music lessons.

Every so often you say something about Ted that makes me laugh out loud, and the idea of him learning how to play the recorder or guitar or something did it. There is probably some kind of computer app where a person plays music, but that's not the same as an instrument of some kind.

Laura, I am perfectly serious and plan to start him on the guitar as soon
as I can set it up.
