Mental Health

I am so concerned about random violence. I blame a lot of
it on the our inability to commit an individual to a mental
facility involuntarily. I find it difficult to believe
that the rage the perpatrators were living with didn't show
up to parents or significant others.

We need more institutions to care for people who cannot
function in society. The trend to deinstitionalize
mental health patients was well meaning but it certainly
needs rethinking. A lot of the former patients walking our
streets are homeless and some are a threat to others.
They seldom volunteer for treatment.

Very often people who need treatment wind up in jail because
they have committed a crime. This does not increase mental
health and exacerbates the problem.

Our high tech society and especially violent video games
play a part in this problem. It is not so far from zapping
creatures in a video game to zapping human beings.

Our children are living in a virtual world and interacting
with machines. Unless parents teach empathy and compassion
at home, we will continue to have random shootings.

I'm with you! There needs to be more options available to people with mental health issues and their families. Even if you know your relative is heading toward endangering themselves or others, you are helpless to do anything about it until after the fact. We shouldn't have to wait.

Absolutely right!! Not many will commit themselves voluntarily and then they
can leave when they so desire.

Well said, Jeri. I so agree.

It is so difficult to cope with mental illness. I think we should make it
a little easier for families.

Agree. I think famlies who don't see problems are into themselves and are too lazy to work on their kids, preferring to think they'll grow out of a mood, not realizing it is more than a mood, but a psychosis. I am curious that all the incidents have involved boys and young men. Maybe it's a testosterone thing. How do our dysfunctional female children handle their rage?

I think the girls act out by being promiscuous and with dress, tattoos and
piercing. Whatever irritates their parents the most. Also drugs and
alcohol. Testosterone must be a factor with all these young males. I
don't see how parents can ignore the signs that their children display.

When then Gov. Reagan closed 11 mental health institutions in California, he ended up having to reopen several, and the prison population exploded. Hmmm... That was several decades ago and we learned nothing. Yes, people are becoming more detached and interact with phones and tablets more often than they do with people.

You are right, the jail population explodes when mental health facilities
are closed.

So many people are buying guns now, allegedly to protect themselves from the crazy people, I'm afraid things are going to get a lot worse.

You know we have an open carry law in Oklahoma. It is ridiculous like
we have regressed to the old West and John Wayne days.

I agree.
