The Lottery

Someone or some combination of someone's is a near billionaire
today. I wonder what they will do with all that money. Will
it make them happy?

Bobby bought l2 tickets and I asked him how he would spend it.
He said he would buy a house in a gated community in Nichols
Hills (our elite old money section) within walking distance
of the country club.

I didn't bother to buy a ticket, knowing that I am very unlucky. The only things I ever won was a plant and an
extremely ugly set of dishes as door prizes.

Ted never found any four leaf clovers either and if possible,
he is unluckier than I am at games of chance.

A friend once said, "The quickest and surest way to double your money, it to take it out of your billfold, fold it over and put it back." I don't do lotto or gambling. All my money goes to diapers and house payments and (as of today) a stinkin' property tax bill.

I know where you are coming from. I fight the good fight with the county
assessor every year but our taxes keep rising even though our neighborhood
becomes less desirable as time goes on. Bobby's theory is that we should
turn in those people whose houses aren't well kept to the various neighborhood associations.

DH has runs of good luck; TV, queen size bed, Lazyboy chair, free dinner coupons for nice restaurants, etc.
Even when I win, I don't; beautiful, hand knit sweater that was 4 sizes too small for me.

Someone won. Whoever got the beautiful sweater.

I hope Bobby wins. It's fun to dream, and he could use some fun. People spend money on any number of things - smoking, hobbies, movie tickets, food we don't need - and each of us can rationalize our choice to the death, but the point is that it's our choice to make. When the lotto gets up so high, people pool together so they can share in lots of chances to win. Hopefully, they get their sharing agreements in writing.

Of course he didn't win but he had fun thinking about it. That lovely
Sassy Goodykontz was responsible for his having a red velvet cake yesterday.
I put a tablespoon of cocoa in the mix and I think it helped.

There is actually a body of research available on money and happiness. I've mentioned in comments on a few blogs already that in the scheme of things, it doesn't really matter to most of us if the prize is 3 million or 640 million--the mania is misguided. Money can't buy happiness, but living comfortably goes a long way. I don't play lotto, although I did it vicariously last night. A facebook page--a car place in the midwest--offered to share it's winning with everybody who liked and shared it's page. Brilliant marketing, especially since they didn't say "share equally" and then of course, there's the assumption of winning!

I think if you have enough so you aren't sweating the necessities of life,
money isn't that important. My third husband was wealthy and miserable and
made everyone around him miserable. I enjoyed the trips and the Porsche but
was glad to leave and live in peace and sanity. I gave the jewelry to my
grand daughters and the fur coats, (excuse me Kris) to my daughter and
daughter in law. Enough is plenty for me.

As I commented on Randy's blog about the lottery, I do not feel cheated because I don't win those few times I play. I consider it entertainment. He thinks players are all delusional. But it's a fun delusion. I have to ask him if he ever does anything foolish just for fun.

Fun is important and I would rather have a lot of it than money in the bank.
My parents were frugal in the extreme. My favorite aunt and uncle took trips
and had a lot of fun. My uncle had a heart attack in his mid fifties and my
aunt was so grateful that they always had a good time. My parents, on the
other hand, missed out on all the travel and fun and my Dad was too ill to
enjoy retirement.

I took bus to D.C. for a one day rally! That was "foolish". And there's a difference in being foolish or wasteful.

Ted has an extremely lucky brother. He won fifty thousand dollars at the
Kickapoo casino. He always wins card games. Boo!
