Life in the Fifties

The music was great folks. I just never did fit in to the Stepford Wife thing and then I got a divoce. Horrors! It was considered so wicked and I got no support whatever from my mother but my Dad just hugged me and said, "I never liked the sonofabitch anyway.

Divorce made a woman so vulnerable in those days. Every married man that was around hit on you. They all thought you had to have "it". Former friends thought you were a Jezebel out to get their man. My exhusband became a saint in their eyes.

Needless to say, one had to construct a whole new life in a time where there were very limited opportunities for women.
I had a job I loved but it didn't pay very well and I had a daughter to support. Every time that I had an unexpected expense, I had to re-mortgage my car. I charged my groceries so that we could have food when all the money was gone.

Strider mentioned a return to the fifties, (not in a good way). I concur, it was not a good time for women. Since I didn't fit the mold, I suffered but my daughter and I came out alright. I don't want to go back. If a time machine ever becomes a reality, avoid that decade.

Goodness, things were not as rosy as we are lead to believe! It was the women like you who made the world better for women like me... Thank you!

There are things about the Sixties I would not want to revisit either! (or the early Seventies for that matter.) I was a young divorced Catholic girl and wow, does it ever sound like your Fifties to me. Yes, we have come a long way, lady!

You know what they say. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. It is hard for me to believe things have changed so much in fifty years.

I grew up in the Fifties and remember them as wonderful years. Of course, I wasn't dealing with adult issues, gender inequality, or racism. I had my hands full with high school peer pressure, dating, and long hours bagging groceries.

I was born in the 50s. Aside from that, I can't say much about them except that 50s music was giving way to Beatles and beyond when I started paying attention to such things.

The thing that still gets to me is: Socially, a woman alone is an embarrassment and a man alone is an opportunity. I don't think mores have changed all that much. I can remember a man in my bereavement group (proudly) talking about people crowding around him to help when he was crying while walking in public. Can I tell you how many times I walked down the street sobbing without anyone turning a head?

I'm sorry you experienced so many bad experiences back then

the fifies were a simpler, more secure time but you are correct about women's rights and I don't even wanna talk about how bad racism was then. Each historical era has it's good and bad aspects.

Wow - sorry it was so rough for you! Hard to believe that was only 50 years ago! Sheesh... I guess I am spoiled with all the opportunity I have that it seems archaic that it wasn't always like this, ya know?
I bet you are a stronger woman because of it though.
