Life

Two of the three people that I love most in the world have
gone through hell this year. Ted has been crippled with
spinal stenosis, had a stroke and a skull fracture. Bobby
has had colon cancer, chemo and an operation still to go.
They have had such a hard time and suffered so much. It
humbles me to see how well they handle it.

I think one of the secrets is that they have kept their
sense of humor about the medical indignities heaped on them.
Ted recently purchased a new golf club, propped it up on the
side of the tv so he could look at it and vows every day to
play golf again. Is that optimism or what? Bobby makes me
laugh every time I talk to him. The nurse that I liked the
most through this latest ordeal had a ready smile and an
earthy sense of humor. When Ted was out of his head and
raving, she was caring and concerned but when he said something funny we were both able to laugh. I am sure that
is how she kept her sanity as an E.R. trauma nurse.

The healing power of laughter is well documented. If we
don't see the funny side of life, we might as well just
give up. There are a lot of platitudes that I could quote,
but they are all true. Grab all the gusto that you can
along the way and it will see you through the hellish times.

Another reminder that I need to laugh more. Humor is how I always got by. I think I hurt so much this year that I forgot to stop and laugh.

I am very happy to hear that your boys are doing ok... humor is definitely something to be proud of, I don't know how I would handle being where Bobby is, or Ted. Hang in there

I don't handle pain well and I really don't see how they do it.

A legendary cure took place when Norman Cousins, the editor of the National Review of Lit., laughed himself well. He had a heart problem and reactive arthritis and a lot of pain. Told that he had little chance of surviving, Cousins focused on positive thinking, faith, hope, and love. He took massive doses of vit. C, and watched Marx brothers films. He said that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give him at least two hours of pain-free sleep, When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, he would switch on the motion picture projector again and it would oftenlead to another pain-free interval. (I got this from Wikipedia.) I think Bobby is already helping himself by refusing to be daunted and keeping an upbeat attitude.

I read this many years ago in the Reader's digest. If it worked for him,
it will work for all of us. Bobby and Ted both have a wonderful sense of
humor although Ted is losing his.

It's laughter, not prayer, that's the miracle worker. You've had it rough, but I'm impressed with your spirit.

Something ridiculous is always happening. Remember all the good laughs we
had when you were here!
