I Just Rememberd ... ..

I was thinking about how nice it was for all the family
to sit around the table together and how it encourages
conversation and gives the children a chance to participate.
I regret that meals are often eaten in front of the tv or
on the fly.

When we went to my grandmothers house the dining
room was small and she had two sittings for dinner. The
men ate first and then at the second sitting the women and
children ate. All the best pieces of fried chicken were
always gone and we were left with the drumsticks and wings.
I hated this custom. But I have to remember her cakes
with a special fondness. She deliberately used too much
sugar and they fell which made them ugly but delicious.
My mouth just waters when I think of her burnt sugar cake
and her Aunt Bill's Brown Candy . Think extreme caramel.

My other grandmother was a better all around cook and her
specialty was apple pie. Only Laura and Celeste achieved
the same result. Celeste no longer cooks since her
dementia has increased and perhaps I can persuade Laura
to make one the next time she is here.

I am very sad for Celeste. Her physical health is outstanding and Red's is not. I think he tries to stay
alive to care for her. I think she will live a long time
in her altered state. Death is not the worst thing that
can happen to you. The worst thing is when your body
becomes a prison with your mind on holiday.

I shudder at the thought of becoming so old or feeble that I cannot care for myself- or, as you put it, my mind going on a holiday and leaving my body behind.

Remember when the mother always ended up with the back and ribs so everyone else would get a good piece of chicken?

It is much better to serve the children first if you have limited space or
to do like we do at family reunions. We serve buffet style and the
children have their own table.

This is sort of typical.I do remembered going out to dinner at someone house and the first sitting were the children's they ate earlier
The company dinner was much later. But we did not have a shortage of food.
The first sitting is that they fed the children what they wanted and did not missed out any thing. This happens a lot.But they do not run out of food.
Someone should had my a fast trip to KFC for more chickens

We didn't run out but the whole family loved the breasts and pulley bones.
I don't think they are even cutting chickens up to have a wish bone anymore.

In my book, the "good stuff" is thighs and wings, although drumsticks are good too, just have to eat more of them. Anyway, as for your last sentence: This scares the hell out of me and I have a section in my health care proxy instructing Donna and the docs on what to do if I am paralyzed or hopelessly incapacitated. The roommate I had during the last few days of my most recent hospital stay was somewhat coherent (most of the time) but he had been in a nursing home for several months after his wife could no longer care for him at home. He had internal bleeding, which they couldn't locate, but his only hope for the future was to leave the hospital and return to the nursing home. This is one of those situations where I can only think of "what I think I might want in such a situation", but my feeling on the subject now is that spending my days in bed, being rolled and changed is not something I would aspire to.

My friend has perfect physical health which in this case is not a blessing.

How archaic was that custom that men always came first when it came to treats. A better way would have been for your grandmother to serve a selection of chicken pieces in the first serving and a like selection for the second. Incidentally, I grew up observing that many people preferred drumsticks.

It was a terrible custom and it could certainly have been fairer to do
it your way. Now, I can hardly eat chicken. I don't know what all the
processing does but it sure doesn't taste like it used to.

Wow!!! What a crappy custom your Grandmother used to have. Geez. You'd think they'd save you some of the good stuff...
