Horror in Our Neighborhood School

I took Ashley to school this morning and didn't see anything
the least bit unusual. I went to the post office and the
library and when I came home I passed the school and saw
news crews out front. Some poor distraught man had hanged
himself from the basket ball hoop on the play ground. He
apparently had no connection with the school. Fortunately,
the Principal had seen the gruesome sight at eight before
school began. None of the children saw anything unusual.
It was too cold for the playground to be available.

I pity the poor soul who was driven to suicide but can't help
but wonder at the place he chose. Fortunately his rage was
directed at himself instead of at the innocent children in
school.

They have called a parents meeting for tonight and I hope
they put a chain link fence around the school. Last year
an arsonist burned up the new and expensive wooden playground equipment that the PTA had purchased. We, the
parents and grandparents bought a lot of cookie dough and
other things we did not need to get that equipment.

My school in the 30s in Chicago had a wrought iron fence but it was not locked. What I know about suicides is that they are anger turned inward. It's the final "I'll show you" moment, is often meant to punish those they love, and it is pathetic that they end any effort to get well by such a miserable act.

Years ago, a middle-aged man threw himself off a New York bridge, was rescued in time. His family said, "Why didn't you tell us ... etc." and his response was, "I've been telling you -- no one was listening."

ARGH! What a rotten final statement that makes!

Yikes. Why why why are people obsessed with schools??

So very sorry, Jeri, on so many levels.

It was really a shock to us all but thank goodness he didn't harm the children.

shocking thing to happen --he must have planned things beforehand

He must have planned and executed his plan late at night. He was probably
so emmeshed in his own misery that he didn't think about the shock to the
children.

Oh my gosh! That is so horrible! I cannot imagine why someone would choose such a place to end their life.

I imagine he didn't want his loved ones to find him and was probably miserable enough that he just didn't think.

It is very sad. He was only 25.

The elementary school I attended mumble mumble years ago had a six or seven foot chain link fence around it even then.

The first time I saw a fenced school yard was the first time I was in New
York and it seemed odd to me. Evidently it is a necessity now everywhere.

I feel for the guy who felt he had to commit suicide, but seems strange that he picked a school yard to do it in. It's hard to understand someone's reasoning for doing something like that. At least the principal found him first.
comment by jaydensblog on Jan 15, 2013 7:59 PM ()
Yes it is very sad. But at least there was no violence against children.

Let us know if you find out why he chose the location. Seems like he would have done it later in the day if he wanted to be noticed.

This matter has really been hushed up. The paper didn't say what school,
just said that it happened in an elementary school here and gave it only
about two inches of space. It was barely mentioned on the news.

Back when we were growing up, nothing like this ever happened, and there was no such thing as a grief counselor for school children. Now, seems like they are kept busy.

I will find out more when Ellie picks up the girls. The man was identified.

Me too. We really need the school yard fenced. This is an area where
many children walk to school. Hope no one gets ideas.
