Henry

Henry is one of my great blessings. He takes care of our
yard as well as many others, and is always open to any new
project that I have in mind. Some demented soul put white
rocks in the front flower bed and Henry has agreed to clean
it out for me but I told him to wait until it was cooler. This
heat is hard on him. He is in his early sixties.

Henry doesn't just rock along cutting firewood and doing
lawns. He also drives a city bus at night. Every other
Monday morning, I can count on him unless he has an
appointment with the V. A. He has a profound hearing
loss. I am not sure if it is from Viet Nam or from the noisy
equipment that he uses. Now that the horse is out of the
barn, he wears earmuffs.

I am trying to plan an area that will be suitable for our
heat and still look good. It will be a southern exposure
and that means a lot of sun. I am thinking something tall
with shasta daisies in front with room for annuals in the
very front. Does anyone have any suggestions. Don't suggest succulents because I am not that desperate. I
have gone all through my garden books. We are in zone
7.

I still have small home grown tomatoes and zucchini from
my midget vegetable garden. It has been so worth it.
Today, I am going to make Fredo's pesto because I have
lots of herbs.

I love the double knockout roses.

No suggestions here. The only things I can grow successfully are weeds.

I have forgotten what zone we are in. Black Thumb here will not be offering garden advice/suggestions -- be grateful. Four years ago I trimmed a plumbago bush -- they are indestructible but after that, it looked horrible until just recently. Our bougainvilla (Sp?) grows so rapidly that I can't keep up with trimming it and I need a ladder for the top branches. I have had it trimmed professionally but Ed hates to pay for stuff like that. Now it looks like a guy with a really bad afro cut.

I am getting the same look with the holly. Oh for a bougainvilla.

Hmmm poor Henry. Why does he work so much, do you know? I hope he's doing ok.

I don't know. He is very energetic and is probably saving for retirement.
The heat is hard on him and I worry about him and his work ethic.

Zone 7. I'm so jealous because I'm in Zone 4 here. Las Vegas is Zone 8, but it might as well be on the moon for me, since my part of the year there is skewed toward winter.

Don't be envious because it was l08 yesterday. Just as bad as last summer,
but it did start cooling down in September last year. I am longing for a
mountain breeze. Don't laugh, but I washed the cars this morning just for
the bliss of staying wet awhile.

Henry sounds like a great person to know. Too bad he cant come to my house and still make his evening bus run. I have no ideas for your garden. My favorites are things like German Iris and Queen Anne's Lace- neither of which sound like they might work.

One of my favorites, hydrangeas probably won't work on the south side of
the house. There is a little overhang but not much. I really like ground
cover and vines so we will have to go to the nursery and consult.

Shasta daisy would be nice I liked that.

I wish I had moved some from the farm. I really like them. I have daisies
in pots in front but as you know, my house is pretty plain jane on the
outside.

Sounds like you know what does best in your climate! I'm sure it will turn out great!

I won't have Henry dig up the rocks until planting time when it is cooler.
Loved your garden. I saw in my garden book a method of putting plants
like pumpkin on a step ladder, resting the pumpkins on the steps. We are
burning up here.
