Hello Out There and More About Outsourcing

I have been into the new babies in the family for a month and
now that I have finished shopping for things they will need
and don't know it, I am onto home decor.

When I was strolling through the garage, it suddenly came
to me that five pieces of beautiful etched glass were in a
very dangerous spot. They are silver and gold with silver etching. We bought them at a flea market several years a go.
I thought wouldn't they look great on every other cabinet
door. Ted installed them and they make my kitchen look
very French. He was not able to stand up to cutting out
the doors and putting them in but we attached them with
mirror hangers and really like them.

I am hoping that Jerms will come over and paint my fireplace
wall antique red. I have the paint and all the equipment but
I know he is very busy.

Now, let me tell you the sad couch story. I bought a very
expensive couch that was covered in several different fabrics.
The cushions are down and the feathers kept poking through
the chenille on the seat cushions. On top of that, when
anyone sat on it, it left awful marks on the chenille. I
called the furniture company and they sent out a Tech who
took pictures and ordered new cushion covers. I knew they
would do the exact same thing so I took the cushions to an upholsterer and had him cover them with leather. They are
back home and antique red and we love them because they
are made with heavy welting and will last us out. I can
clean them and since the couch is curved, you can seat
five people and they can all see the TV. I am telling you
this because it is one horrible result of outsourcing to
China. They do not use quality fabric and they don't design
for long wear. The cushions were not welted and already
looked like they would come apart. The tech told me it
was just designed to look pretty and not for use. I think
it is terrible to send our jobs to China. Greed, pure and
simple.

That's why America-made costs more...it is better!

We might walk over with the baby this afternoon. I'm off tomorrow, so that looks hopeful, after the baby's pediatrician appt.

If you can, please post pics of the awesome decor.

I know, but when I told him I wanted the cushions done by an American upholsterer, he suggested that I use his Dad and we were delighted to find
him. I have some other things that I want him to do when we can afford it
and as a bonus we met a very colorful family.

Congrats on the successful kitchen project. I know how rewarding it can be to get the hubby to do something we really want done, and the wisdom to know when to have someone else help with a project.

The antique glass is so pretty and I am so glad he could stand doing it but
he could never stand up to a paint job.

Wish I could see some pictures. Sounds like you have excellent taste.

The old glass is so pretty and it makes my plain white cabinets look country
French.

I need a new couch but they all look so cheap that I am afraid to buy one- and I cannot afford an expensive couch. Sigh...

I don't think you can beat a good upholsterer. I needed something we could
both lie down on at the same time and watch tv and that could seat a lot
of people. That is the reason that I bought new.

Your cabinet accents sound lovely! Nice find, and kudos to Ted.

I plan to have my old favorite sofa reupholstered. I love the old thing, so comfortable, and I plan to give the business to a local family business, who did the original job years ago. It would be cheaper to buy a new sofa made in you know where with heaven only knows what materials treated with God only know what chemicals, but I'd rather live with it old and ragged and covered with a comforter until I can support these local craftsmen.

You are very wise to choose an American craftsman who takes pride in his
work. Ted used to be like Laura's Gary. There is nothing he couldn't do
when he was well.

I shouldn't laugh, but "just designed to look pretty and not for use"? I can't believe anybody would say that. Reminds me of the guy who said "that's what bumpers are for" after his wife did almost $500 damage to the back of my van.
