Decorating Choices and a Movie

My children feel free to criticize my decorating choices at
length. Frankly, it makes me just the teeniest bit angry.
They go in for sleek contemporary and that is not my style.
However, I never point that out to them. I have made my
share of errors and white carpeting was one of the worst.
It was lovely but we are not white carpet people.

Do any of you remember the craze for Danish Modern. My
sister had it in abundance. I still see Russel Wright dishes
in antique stores. That was the height of chic when I was
married the first time. Avocado green and Harvest Gold
dominated the sixties. Then came forest green and burgundy
on the scene. My favorite colors are the blues and greens.

My sister-in-law has a Colorado house which they built themselves. It is stone and log and she has decorated it
beautifully. She has unified the rooms with lots of molding
and strips of a turquoise between it at the ceiling. The great room has exposed beams and a loft. It is in the woods. It took them twenty years to complete it but now
that they are retired, they have the leisure to enjoy it.
I don't have the patience to wait that long but they kept
their dream going.

They came over for dinner last night and we watched War
Horse afterward. It was a good movie but I will never
watch another animal movie if I have a choice. The ordeal
that horse went through nearly killed me.

yeah I would be scared to watch that movie for the horse... I am with ya! As far as decorating --- they are probably just giving you a hard time. I know we do that with my parents - for example they leave the plastic cover on every new appliance that they get.

My deco style is more like "early junk".

As for us in the old school house we have a blend of everything.
From Mission Oak to country and modern and then some.
It is a blend for this we enjoy .
You have to overlook at this as the generation is much different than ours.
We loved our style of living and collectible that we have collect over the years.
We did not find anything great today and not surprised as most of these things are being depleted. My children to not diss us how we live and they are learning.
I do understand as this is our generation and not there.
They will be collecting things from the sixties and on.
Every or most of it are gone.I loved the sounds of your sister law house there.
Seemed interesting.Art Deco one of my favorite as this move on from us.
We will have a lot to talk about all of this.

I think we call it eclectic. I like art deco, art noveau and some victorian
but my ultimate favorite is French furniture. I only have a few pieces.
I think they dis our taste because they want us to buy things they like so
they can inherit them.

Our house, built in 1971, has harvest gold bathroom fixtures -- they are hard to match. Will re do everything at some point. My b.i.l. spoke disparagingly of our being clueless because our living room has antiques. It's not Florida he said. He told anyone he talked to how out of touch we were. My own style is a blend of some antique and some Oriental and some modern. But the living room is all Edward. He used to to tell me they all agree with him that we didn't know how to decorate for where we are. Anhyway, I didn't have children so they can't diss my taste now.

Tell your bil that I don't think there is a mandate to decorate by the state
you live in. We ought to fill our houses with things we love and I do like
antiques and oriental furniture.

I have a daughter who seems to enjoy picking at everything I/we do so I just don't show her anything.

Children almost seem required to disagree with their parents taste. My mother
hated antiques because she grew up with them and I hated forties modern be-
cause I grew up with it.

I've seen a lot of the current modern decorating style in renovated Las Vegas hotel rooms, and some of it is very ugly, makes the place feel like a dormitory for business travelers.

When we were kids we had some play dishes in that Russel Wright style, but we didn't know the style had a name behind it. There are some similar real dishes over at the red cabin, I'll go see what kind they are.

Check those dishes. Russel Wright's are highly collectable. You have a
treasure trove stored away.

Know what you mean about the kids not liking your decorating tastes. I love antiques. My son and his wife prefer modern- don't know what to call it. They buy a lot at IKEA.
