Common Sense

I wonder if technology has replaced common sense. Perhaps the human brain can stand only so much.

I am watching my grandaughter scrambling to take care of
her crawling baby. As all babies do, he has no sense of
danger or prohibitions. Babies are intent on suicide it seems.

I told her about the ease of putting the baby in a play pen and was told that, "people don't do that anymore." It was
so easy to put my children in a safe play pen with toys or
in Bobby's case with a devoted cat as well. I was able to
run outside for a minute and to get my housework done.

As long as the babies can see you, they are usually happy
and learn to amuse and soothe themselves. I can't believe
you would choose to be hyper vigilant and be worn out
from chasing them all day. There is enough work involved
in child care without making it harder than necessary.

Guess I am just an old fashioned grandmother who does
not believe in a child centered world.

Wow- people don't do that anymore? Yes, they do! I hate all of these philosophies that give children all of the freedoms and cause them to be self-centered and self-entitled. I think several generations of badly behaved children should have taught us by now that not wanting to stymie a child's development produces children with no ability to accept even small failures with no respect for others.

We use a play pen for Sofia and you're right, as long as she can see us, she's fine. Jennifer can get a lot done that way. She has what I call the "command center" and she loves it! I think I posted a picture of it previously. Obviously, babies should be allowed some free range roaming from time to time to encourage exploration and development.

I think play pens are great for Moms and babies. Sofia has wonderful, nurturing parents and feels secure playing near them. Jennifer feels secure knowing that Sofia is safe. They have plenty of time to explore
when both parents have time to play.

Yes, playpens have become a "no-no"! Supposedly, interferes with a child's maturational development! They were lifesavers for me, however.

I think the ban on play pens is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. They were life savers for me too.

when dakota was a baby we called his playpen baby jail. but I did use it so I could get things done around the house or even just sit down and relax!

Baby jail is a cute word. It sure helped didn't it because until you have
a baby, you never realize how much work is involved.

Outcomes are the best way to evaluate these 'new" ideas, and for the most part, they don't work. Young adults need constant approval, feedback and attention. They need to be liked by their employer. Unfortunately, the list goes on.

The young adults just aren't going to get those things in the work place.
What an awakening they are going to have.

no you are not old fashioned. She needs to get a grip.If she want to chase her baby all of the time and let it be.By the way modern mom still used play pen.But this is her problem.
I will also get tired of her chasing the child.Maybe that is her way of exercising
comment by fredo on July 3, 2012 8:53 AM ()
If it is h er way of exercising, she is getting plenty of it! It is hard to watch. Hope you are having a quiet holiday weekend.

That's kind of irritating, isn't it? Just watching the mother would get on my nerves, never mind having to worry about the baby. Hope you are having a good holiday time.
