Bloom on and Other Trivia

I don't usually buy a lot of annuals but they are showy
and I like the look as they spill out of planters and trail
in hanging baskets. Wave Petunias are my favorites for the
south side of the house and geraniums and hydrangeas are
flourishing on the back porch. I always plant hydrangeas
in the yard after they bloom but they have been stingy about
blooming, although they come up every year. I got a plant
called bloody Mary and of course it is red.

One of my favorites for our harsh summers is crepe myrtle.
You can count on nearly three months of vibrant blooms. I
have pink and lilac ones but this cold winter killed the
five new black ones that I planted. (Only the foliage was
black.)

Rex has developed a passion for carrots. I steam a package
of carrots and he matches me bite for bite. We don't even
butter them. I guess we must be craving vitamins.

Dramus mentioned being told to scrub eyelashes with
baby shampoo. Mine told me the same thing but fortunately
I read the comment about how much it hurt before I attempted
it. He also told me to shun mascara but I will not do that.
My eyes are more comfortable now that I am using drops four
times a day. I need to stock up on zyrtec today too as the
benedryl just exacerbates the dry eyes.

My dogs love raw carrots. Guess they would also like them steamed, but I never thought to do that since they love the raw ones so much.

I have two urns, full of weeds ... no energy to replant. I use tears for dry eyes and forget to apply as often as I need. My vision has worsened. I am wondering if it's related to my "episode". I did all my stuff today, meaning weights and workout.

I don't know about cuttings for hydrangea. What I do is bury a shoot in a pile of soil and wait for the roots to develop. THEN, after it has roots I cut it from the plant and replant the rooted section. It always worked, very easy.

Zyrtec is called Reactine in Canada. It's what I use but it isn't working very well this month.

I was shocked at how the Zyrtec was not working yesterday. My nose was
very runny and it cost 4 times as much as benedryl.

Do your hydrangeas change color sometimes? I read that acidic stuff added to the soil will help them turn blue. As for the baby shampoo thing, it's just that anyone with allergies or sensitive skin should avoid it.

Yes, if I don't put nails around them, they are pink. I love the blue ones
so I usually do long before spring and time to bloom. I am due back at the
Dr. in two months but my eyes already feel better due to drops 4 times a
day and hypoallergenic mascara. Almay makes a good one.

I love wave petunias and want to get some to hang on my porch. my husband told me not to make the yard too pretty as we are renting and then someone may want to buy the house!
comment by elkhound on Apr 25, 2014 4:06 AM ()
That is always a consideration but people like good renters. The wave
petunias are so pretty and make such full hanging baskets. How is your
Dakota?

Anything flowering in the yard seems magical to me. I really wish I could get some iris to bloom some time.
comment by troutbend on Apr 24, 2014 8:06 PM ()
Iris can take brutal conditions but they don't like shade. I have been
trying to remember a sunny spot in your yard. They always make me think of
my grandmother. She had every color and lilacs and roses that she had
brought from Nebraska when they homesteaded.

I remember rooting hydrangeas when I was a kid. Bury a stalk from an established plant and it grows roots. I used to experiment with changing the colors of the flowers. Rusty nails in the hole would make make the blooms a brownish. redish color. I can't remember what makes them blue, but that was my preference. Every time I see them on sale i think about getting one, but that's as far as it goes. I really don't have open space for new plants. I do have two hollyhock that came from cuttings from the yard 50 years ago. I usually bring a few plants when I move (which isn't often).

I didn't know you could root them from a cutting. Good Information. I think
it takes shiny nails to get the bright blue color. I hate moving and wish
that I had brought shasta daisies with me when I moved from the farm. I
love hollyhocks because they are such an old fashioned flower.

I don't wear any makeup. It's a wonder I attracted a husband with a no heels and no makeup attitude!
We have flowers that sprout up every spring here - I never planted them but I appreciate the person who did! I might look into those crepe myrtles, unless they need a lot of TLC. As I have mentioned many times, I have a black thumb...
comment by kristilyn3 on Apr 24, 2014 7:50 AM ()
Crepe Myrtles do not need any tlc. Once established they live on and on and
reward you every spring. You are too young to need makeup.
