First of all I have to tell you about the book, A Available
Wife by Robert Goolrick. It is a first novel and it is so
full of darkness, passion, deceit and Murder that it enthralls you and you have to read it in one setting. I
don't usually read books on the dark side but I am very glad
I read this one with all its twists and turns.
It is set in 1907 in Wisconsin in a small town where people
go mad from the eternal winter snow. The roads are impassable even for horses. Sex is the only amusement, but
this is not a vulgar book. The language is exquisite. He
writes like the Bronte sisters could have written if they
had been permitted to have real lives.
Secondly, I have been thinking how grateful I am for my
friendships with other women. I am losing two to dementia
and one who is moving to be with her children in Baltimore.
I have shared so much with them over the years. Someone
once told me that a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved and
a joy shared is a joy doubled. I will miss them greatly
and hopefully we will meet more people as time marches
ever so swiftly on.
We have ceiling fans on the back porch and the summer nights
are so peaceful with the breeze and the view over the
field behind us. It is such a pleasure to sit out there
with a glass of wine and watch the sun retreat.
