August 23, 1947

I was seventeen years old and giddy with the freedom from
parental restraint and I paid no attention at all to newspaper headlines. However, I found an old Oklahoma Times paper dated August 23, l947. I thought you might be
interested in some of the news items.

U.S. skeptical as Reds promise to free Yanks. The Russians announced Saturday that three American enlisted men taken into custody just inside the Soviet occupation zone
in North Korea on August l2 will be released Sunday.

Greek Government falls as U.S. sends more Aid. Dissent
Smashes Cabinet. The coalition cabinet gives up after
trio quits in tiff over reshuffling ministers.

Taffy helps Tinker Pilots test plane. Taffy is a cocker
spaniel who has logged 200 hours in the air. He can
climb the ladder to get into the plane.

Arlington Virginia, August 23:

Seven women sitting under hair dryers in Emma Lee's
beauty shop discovered that their hair was red, right down
to the Bobby Pins. A man from an adjoining shop had
painted a truck red and some of the spray was sucked up
toward an intake fan in the beauty shop. The painter
said he was sorry and he blushed at what the ladies said.

The following excerpt from Off My Chest by Phillip Wylie
tickled my fancy, "Boredom, I would like to bet has brought
about more divorces than infidelity; there can be a certain
piquancy and a certain challenge in an erring spouse but
nothing on earth is as infuriating as continual dullness".

Loans are offered for 50 dollars and up on any good
security. It is a good thing I didn't see that because I was
always broke.

Dorothy Dix advises that if you want to be friends with
your children you should pal up with them when they are
little...I am not at all sure that is good advice.

There was no celebrity news other than a picture of
Kathryn Grayson who was getting married.

When I was a kid, the mom and pop restaurant on the ground floor of our building served 2 pork chops, sliced tomatoes/lettuce, bread, for 50 cents. that was in the late 30s, early 40s.

In l947, I ate all my meals out and I could get swiss steak, mashed potatoes
and a salad for 50 cents. A hamburger, chips and a coke was 30 cents so
I usually went that way in order to have more money to spend on clothes.
I could live on ten dollars a week and had l6 dollars left to blow.

How fun! I was also going through a box of old newspapers yesterday, but none of them was that old, or that interesting. I did save a grocery store ad, just because the meat prices were so low, and that was only about 20 years ago.

Amazing isn't it that loans started at fifty dollars! Fifty dollars will hardly
buy dinner now.

Always interesting to see what the news climate was in what is now the distant past. Reminds me of the feature newsreels that were so very cute and corny -- the phony travelogues, the voice over, unctuous and patronizing.

When I was a kid, people gathered on the sidewalk to watch buskers (street entertainers) -- one of the most common was a black guy with a trained chicken. People threw pennies. Is TV really such an improvement?

Live entertainment, even with a chicken would be better than watching Honey Boo Boo. My children are addicted to Honey Boo Boo. It is a new
low in television.

She married a handsome fellow named Johnny Johnson. They were a good
looking couple.

I'm not sure what the exact date was but that was just about the time my family moved south from mid-state NY to Miami, Fla.

The news was certainly milder in those days and more restrained. I would never have let my children leave home at that tender age. Miami would be
quite a change from New York.
