I was seventeen years old and giddy with the freedom from
parental restraint and I paid no attention at all to newspaper headlines. However, I found an old Oklahoma Times paper dated August 23, l947. I thought you might be
interested in some of the news items.
U.S. skeptical as Reds promise to free Yanks. The Russians announced Saturday that three American enlisted men taken into custody just inside the Soviet occupation zone
in North Korea on August l2 will be released Sunday.
Greek Government falls as U.S. sends more Aid. Dissent
Smashes Cabinet. The coalition cabinet gives up after
trio quits in tiff over reshuffling ministers.
Taffy helps Tinker Pilots test plane. Taffy is a cocker
spaniel who has logged 200 hours in the air. He can
climb the ladder to get into the plane.
Arlington Virginia, August 23:
Seven women sitting under hair dryers in Emma Lee's
beauty shop discovered that their hair was red, right down
to the Bobby Pins. A man from an adjoining shop had
painted a truck red and some of the spray was sucked up
toward an intake fan in the beauty shop. The painter
said he was sorry and he blushed at what the ladies said.
The following excerpt from Off My Chest by Phillip Wylie
tickled my fancy, "Boredom, I would like to bet has brought
about more divorces than infidelity; there can be a certain
piquancy and a certain challenge in an erring spouse but
nothing on earth is as infuriating as continual dullness".
Loans are offered for 50 dollars and up on any good
security. It is a good thing I didn't see that because I was
always broke.
Dorothy Dix advises that if you want to be friends with
your children you should pal up with them when they are
little...I am not at all sure that is good advice.
