Animal Hoarding

There was a chilling show on Animal Planet about people
who hoard animals. They just can't seem to stop. The one about tiger hoarding was the most interesting. This woman
could just not seem to stop when it came to tigers. She
allowed them to breed which was illegal and just kept getting more and more. You can imagine the difficulty of
obtaining food for them. They were in pens which is horrible for the tiger although they were kept clean and
well fed. There is no doubt that she had a special mystique
with the big cats. She could crawl in and get the cubs out
for supplementary feeding. Her lawyer had witnessed this
but she was so clever that the World Wildlife Association
spied on her but could never catch her with the cubs. They
finally found out from her orders of tiger milk on the inter
net.

It wasn't until a man was mauled cleaning cages that it
was brought to a halt. She was so in love with the thought
that she could breed them and zoos often failed to do so
that she was a little crazy. Ultimately, it ended in tragedy for her and the tigers.

The next concerned wolf hybreds. A woman, who was in love
with Native American culture, wanted to walk with wolves.
She ended up bonding with a man who claimed to be a Lakota-
Sioux medicine man. Ted and I doubted his heritage because
he had blue eyes and not one single Native American feature.
He dressed in animal skins and conducted sweat lodges. He
broke with her because she had established a pack of these
half wolf-half dog hybrids and didn't establish dominance
over the pack. They eventually tore her apart and had to
be put down.

The World Wildlife Association said that the mixed breed
was more dangerous than wolves would have been. They stated
that if you bred a retriever and a working dog that they
would be a difficult dog to live with because their instincts conflicted.

This was a difficult show to watch but it was very interesting. Human behavior and animal behavior have always
fascinated me.

If I was alone I might turn into one of those cat ladies. Right now, Buddy is so jealous we could never add any more animals to the house. When he's gone we'll probably get two male kittens. I don't know how Jondude manages to add new cats that get along so well.

I enjoy The Animal Planet, I haven't seen the episode you have mentioned, but I will keep a look out for it.

I was in love with the Meer Cats until they started repeating the shows so I am sure they will repeat this one.

It was interesting, especially the tiger one but it is sick behavior.

Tippi Hedron, the mother of Melanie Griffin, breeds tigers in captivity. Have you ever watched anything about her?

I saw a documentary on her about her tigers. She does have them in huge cages on a ranch but I just don't see the thrill.

No, I haven't but remember her from the Hitchcock movies.

At one time my sis and b.i.l. had 13 cats. They are down to 4 now, but my sis would have more if he'd let her. He's been there done that and wants to keep things manageable now. My sis is a creature of instant emotional gratification. b.i.l. takes care of the litter and most everything else because sis has become a semi-invalid. She's so addled that when a potential kitty is up for adoption in this area, she tries to trick him into taking it by getting me to get it first and then bring it over. I shoot that down pretty quick.

My cousin keeps about l4 cats in cages, ostensibly so they won't get hurt
but I think it is not good for the cats and obsessive on her part. She
feeds and cleans their litter boxes twice daily. My family is cat crazy.

There are so many instances of less exotic animal hoarding-like people living with 50 cats or dogs, and people who keep hundreds of indoor and outdoor animals in residential areas. I think all cases are likely people who never developed healthy attachments to people and don't have strong ties to parents or even their own children. Very sad.

It is very sad. People get lonely and there are always abandoned animals
around to love them. I don't see how you can have more than two or three
with out becoming enslaved.

Did all the tigers get put down???? Geez. That would be interesting but hard to watch...

They didn't say the tigers were put down and I hope zoos could take them.
The wolf dogs were so vicious that there were tranquilized and then put
down. There was no way that anyone felt they could walk in the pens without risking serious injury.
