Andy G

Andy Griffith always seemed like a good guy to me, and the other day I binge-watched some very old episodes of The Andy Griffith Show on Netflix, and enjoyed the nice-guy attitude of the entire show. Two episodes stood out for me. In one, a stranger came to town who knew everything about everyone there. No one bothered to ask how he got all this information, and they were startled and frightened. Soon they were ready to run this stranger out of town. There were spy & war hints in the dialogue, Barney asking the stranger, “Sprechen sie Deutsch?” at one point.

But they were all made to be ashamed of their “foreigner” distrust by Andy when he found out the guy had simply been reading their hometown newspaper avidly.

The other one mentioned Moslems. Two little old sister grannies were running a still and they’d sell only to people who were celebrating special occasions, not “just for nippin or drinkin.” So all the men coming to purchase moonshine said it was for various holidays no one had heard of, including Mohammed’s birthday. The grannies smile and wave to one bearded man leaving with a jar, and they call after him, “Happy Mohammed’s birthday!” And the one lady remarks to her sister, “I never knew there were so many Moslems in Mayberry.”

Aside from the improbability of a Moslem drinking alcohol to honor Mohammed, it was all pretty friendly.
I do miss Andy Griffith. Same with Buddy Ebsen.

"Andy Griffith always seemed like a good guy to me"--you should see his movie "A Face In The Crowd"--powerful performance and he wasn't a nice guy!

Never saw that. I'd like to -- I can handle him playing a villain.

My objection to the Gleason show was that the humor came from his obesity and the other guy's stupidity. I guess it was Ok in the days before PC, but I didn't find it funny or entertaining.

Yeah, the jokes relied a lot on meanness that wouldn't fly now.

Such a relaxing show to watch. I always look at things like the dish pattern that Aunt Bee has and the hats and clothes in general.

Sometimes I think it's blue willow, and other times I pretend it could be Currier and Ives. On the Cosby Show, Clair Huxtable's dish pattern was Laura Ashley Petit Fleur Blue - one of my dish patterns, too.

Now I'm going to have to check the dishes too.

It is refreshing to watch something without nudity and sex and vile
curse words. That is why we love old movies.

Yes, exactly -- where the characters are actually trying to be good people.

I'm too busy to watch the vintage TV shows. Even the original Star Trek goes unwatched now. Although, I must admit I have watched all of them at least a dozen times each.

My sister and I were just talking about the original Star Trek's velour costumes. And of course how short the women's costumes were.

There was a few old shows that I watched religiously starting with Star Trek, the one you mention and Jackie Gleason ate two that I really couldn't stomach. Love, American Style; It Takes a Thief; Laugh-in; Twilight Zone; I guess there were quite a few winners!

The Jackie Gleason Show appeared entirely different once I grew up. As a little kid I was afraid of Jackie Gleason, because he was always so mad at everybody.
