Plumbing, After the Polar Vortex

I’ll bet I’m not the only person needing an emergency plumber today, after the last few days of crazy temperatures. A pipe burst in my pantry, must have been spraying for a good while before I woke and heard it. The pantry is a step down from the kitchen, so the kitchen wasn’t flooded. The floor back there tilts back too, so the water collecting there was running down the cracks in the floor to a corner of the basement, where there’s stone. So it could have been worse.

I remembered where the shutoff valve was to the house water, and closing that stopped all the spraying. I’ve been cleaning for a while and it’s somewhat better, but the whole pantry should be chopped off the house, really. It’s so old and rotten.

Getting by on water in bottles and gallons from the store. Haven’t heard anything back yet from my landlord about the plumber.

Kind of caps off a dismal holiday.

It was 14 below here, for a couple of days and nights, before moving east. We have a problem with pine bark beetles, and 25 below for about a week would deal them a serious blow, but I'm sure we don't want it be that cold for that long - it would likewise deal us a serious blow.

That sucks, but at least you have a landlord to handle it. I have never had a frozen pipe--until last year--right after they insulated the foundation sills in the basement. The pipe is on the warm side, but the insulation blocks just enough heat that the cold can reach the pipe. But it has to go to -15 for a few days before anything happens, and we only hit 0 for one night. Good luck!

That's interesting -- that the insulation blocks the heat. What a good thinker put that in. And your temperatures get colder than mine, usually.

You have a lot of company with plumbing problems this week!

Oh, that's for certain. The plumber, who fixed things quickly once he arrived, said he had his own water main break and had to have the water company come out to shut it off, due to the position of the break. In cities where it got much colder than my area, I can only imagine how desperate it got.
