Afterwards

I still feel a lift from the debate, and enjoy repeating these words: Chinese steel, nasty woman, 6-foot portrait. Ha ha ha. But I always feel grateful when a bully gets demoted.

And I thought Hillary’s remarks on abortion were just about perfect. She did not get a chance to mention that late-term ones are very seldom done, but I think she expressed the difficult circumstances of them.

Things in a society can get pretty third-world fast when it is not legal. A relative of mine some generations back died from complications of an illegal procedure, which she resorted to out of poverty and desperation. Her husband was an alcoholic who often disappeared for stretches, and she didn't think she could manage with another child. Recently I'd heard of someone in another country a friend knows, who's dealing with an unwanted pregnancy, and abortion is not legal there except in special cases for danger to the mother, etc. There's no RU486 through legal means either, but some sneaks in and can be found. And there are also international organizations that try to help. With the Zika virus becoming a threat in so many Catholic countries, it's a sad thing.

We know that late term abortion is given usually due to gross fetal
abnormalities. When I was pregnant with Linda and it was the epitome of
bad timing, I went through the Armed Forces Medical Museum. I had not
known until then that there were actually two headed babies and babies
born with hearts outside their bodies and other terrible deformities.
Think of the quality of life these poor little ones would have if they
lived. Think how their lives would impact their parents and siblings.
Fortunately it is rare.

Somewhere I read that rabbits, when circumstances are bad for giving birth, like shortage of food, will spontaneously stop a pregnancy, and the baby embryos get reabsorbed by the mother. If only our bodies could be so logical.

My feeling ever since I first heard the word abortion is that NO man should have a say as to what a woman does with her body!!

It would have been nice if the talking heads had mentioned that "partial birth" is a political phrase coined by a right-wing congressman from (I believe) Florida. Granted, it's not pretty, but as you say, it's rare and not the government's business. But from what I've seen on fb, the anti folks weren't persuaded in the least.

I hadn't been thinking about the issue at all this election until the debate question. I was struck by H.C.'s response, because seemed for the first time to me to be protecting specifically women's rights, and I was glad.
