I am learning more about self-publishing than I ever wanted to know, and I wish I had known most of this before I started down this path. That is not to suggest that I would not have self-published or that self-publishing is a bad thing. Many great titles/authors started out as self-published books. Even Strunk and White's "Elements of Style"-a book that continues to be a best seller year after year- started out as a self-published book. (Bet you would never have guessed that one! Surprised me.) I am just learning what the average sales statistics are for all self-published books, both fiction and nonfiction alike, and what is required to beat those odds. Let's just say it is daunting.
I don't know if I have that much time and energy, and most of that energy has to be invested during the first few months after the book is released. (The release date is on or about October 27, 2010.) It should ease up after the first six months, and if after I invest that much time and energy and the book does not sell well, then there will be little point in continuing!)
One of the things I will need to do is set up a blog. I will NOT do that here. You are my friends, my MyBloggers "neighbors" not my clients or customers. I will post a link from here to that page for anyone interested in following my progress, but I am deliberately keeping my personal and professional profiles seperate. I am thinking about setting up fan pages on Facebook and/or Blogger. (NOT Bogster!) So much to think about- so much to do. (Book signings...ugh!) Someone should have warned me how involved this can be!
Those of you with Facebook profiles... I do hope you "become a fan" of my author/book page once I get it up. That costs you nothing and would be oh so supportive!
