Getting Educated

Read a post about senior gays (Fredo? Martin?) recently, and it struck me that I was naive beyond belief. I can't paint now, so I have spent far too many hours in front of the television set. I have some of the premier movie channels. Can't watch horror or gory movies, so I have spent many long hours watching either kiddie movies, or more recently, gay and lesbian themed movies. Ok, so movies are not reality, but the issues are based on real issues, aren't they?

As a former social worker I recognize that every population has its own set of unique issues and problems. I never gave any thought to the issues of our gay population. It just never entered my mind before reading that post. I was naive enough to reduce all of the issues to prejudice against gays (which I abhor), but there truly is so much more, maybe because this prejudice is so insidious and pervasive.

Watching these programs has had a "side-effect", if you want to call it that. I am coming away from this with a near militant stance where the unjust criticism of homosexuals is concerned.

With Martin in the hospital as I write this, I am praying that he does not have to suffer any prejudice at the hands of his caretakers. What I learned is really scary!

When you love someone, you don't fall in love with their body, rather, you fall in love with their soul. Gender is irrelevant.

Thanks for not using your Social Worker Skills, but rather you Human Being skills here. Love, Stephy

Friend of mine back home got her MSW doing a thesis on Gay/Lesbian issues. She lost her house and we moved her in with us (7 people in a trailer, really fun) Partially inspired by living with me, my bf, and 3 lesbians (one an alcoholic after having been "disowned"). She was there when my dad found out about me and "cut me off" from any help or support during my sophomore year of college. While it sucked then, it taught me to stand for myself, and not rely on others in all walks of life. I had no idea she was taking notes about us all at the time either..

We know what we have the oppertunity to experience. That doesn't mean we don't care. You are doing more than most, by working to learn more.

Insightful Dottie.

In a way it's amusing. Our government [australia] considers my partner and I to be strangers -- although we've been together for 42 years and every thing we own is in common. Legally I have not the right to make any decisions for him should he become ill, to visit in hospital, to inherit, ... there is a good side, age pensions are larger because we are treated as singles

With 4 children, I wondered if one or more would be gay. Secretly, I hoped one would so I could show how open minded I was. Silly, I know. One daughter married a black man, and I'm not so open to that. But it's because he's a bum, not black!

Good for you letting yourself be openminded. It's always wonderful to hear that kind of thing

I posted a news article yesterday about a woman who couldn't see her lover of 18 years who was on her death bed--nor could their 4 children say goodbye to their mother!!And people say we want 'special' rights!!

Good for you, Dottie. Everyone craves love and acceptance and they get it from many of us.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It is funny because in some ways people think of the obvious descriminations, but they don't always realize the regular challenges that we sometimes face. At the same time, there are so many wonderful, open, and generous allies out there that helop us.

Re your reply to DDarkstar:
My favorite comic, Lewis Black, has a piece where he compares the Old and New Testament God. He says the New Testament God is wonderful. He actually sent his own sone and allowed the earthlings to kill him, just for his love of mankind. Then he says, "The God of the Old Testament? He's a real prikk! He slaughters whole cities. He kills all the firstborn sons!" Etc. Funny, but he's right.

Over a long period of time I have accumulated some personal data about the folks who decry gays and lesbians. I find that a large proportion of them

1. Love politics and political argument, etc.
2. Have very little sense of humor...
and
3. Feel threatened by anyone who is 'different.'

I am not gay and have never worried about my own sexual identity, but I do wonder about them and their own latent tendencies.

How right you are. Any prejudice is a withering soul blight that casks a long shadow. We all must work to spread enlightenment.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Dottie!!!!
It's a wonderful world filled with "GLBT" families!!!! My younger daughter is a lesbian and so I see the stigma with her and her PTSD and it makes me ROAR at times!! There are some great shows and documentaries about the life of gays!!
