Water Leaks

Susil’s story about leaks reminded me of one horrendous winter night in New York at the loft. Jay was severely compromised and not functioning. I had a home health aide for part of every day. Around 4 a.m. I reached across him to check him out and he was wet. We had a leak but only on his side of the bed. I got up and moved furniture and dragged the bed away from the leak. I don’t remember now how I was able to do that.

I put on high rubber boots, I think they were Jay’s, and went to the roof, one flight up. It was a lake. The water came half way up my legs. Ice and snow had collected around a drain and blocked it.

I called my neighbor, Lila of fashion fame, and we shoveled snow off of the drain and the water slowly started draining off. If we hadn’t done that the roof might have collapsed. I don’t know where Terry was, he might have been traveling, but the women saved this day.

I made sure Jay was dry and then went back to sleep.
Another day in a stressed life or was it all a dream?

xx, Teal

Isn't it amazing how we pull strength from somewhere in a crisis, and then look back and wonder how we did it.

Whew, what an experience! Thank goodness for adrenalin! I can't help but think of the huge snowfalls that hit New York City over the winter. Many folks probably found their roofs were sorely tested, and there were photos of people shoveling deep snow off to relieve the stress. Yikes! I did think of it, living as I do on the top floor of my apartment building. Fortunately the building has a peaked roof, but many buildings with flat roofs collapsed.

The body releases hormones to give us the strength to do what we have to do in emergency situations.

It is amazing what you can do if you have to do it. You are a strong
woman, Teal.

I had a camping tent that leaked once. I didn't get up on the roof to fix it, however. (I don't know how else to respond!)
