Persiflage and Politics
Today was hot again after some really lovely weather and I waited too long to walk so I didn’t. Instead I decided to take my new pants to Susan to have them shortened. What am I, tall?
Susan floored me with this bit of persiflage. When I was in her shop a couple of weeks ago, a woman, Maggie, who works at the Chamber of Commerce came by. We were introduced. Susan told me that, after I left, she told Maggie that I was Ed’s wife. He volunteers at the Chamber on Friday afternoons. The woman opined, “That pretty little thing is Ed’s wife? You’d think he wouldn’t be so grumpy going home to that.â€
Laughing merrily, I told Ed. He scowled and denied being grumpy. (Rolling on floor now.)
Susan is so busy with her shop and raising two teens alone that she hasn’t paid too much attention to the issues in the coming election. I gave her a tutorial. I was really fair, just asking her what her views were on abortion, religious influence on law-making, gay marriage. Bless her, she had all the right answers. So I told her where the Florida candidates stood. Now it’s up to her.
David Gregory who is on MSNBC and Meet the Press, interviewed Charlie Crist (Florida’s governor, turned Independent, now running for the Senate), Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate, Marco Rubio, Republican candidate. Gregory was pretty hard on Crist, the idea being that the Republicans weren’t supporting him so he turned Independent in order to run and that was flip-floppy and self-serving.
Charlie Crist kept the polls open during the 2008 election and this helped the Democrats and he gave Obama a cordial welcome when he came to the state, going so far as to give him a hug. So the Republicans turned ugly and he didn’t need that and left. Republicans across the board do not dare have any views that are contrary to the established agenda that is pretty blatantly to derail every Obama initiative and make him a one-term president. Any Republican straying from this effort is ostracized. I don’t see anything wrong with Crist turning Independent and I am voting for him. I liked him as governor. Meek is wishy-washy and not all that competent. Marco Rubio is a young, good-looking, appealing candidate with a touch of self-deprecation and a warm smile. Every mother’s dream son. His views are evangelical. Need I say more?
I wrote David Gregory that I thought his questions had been handed to him by Rubio’s campaign manager.
