Money in Politics

I am overwhelmed with E mail and behind in reading posts. Every day I delete stuff and the count stays at over 400 and it doesn’t go down.

Ed and I went to a Move On organization meeting (Democrats) some time ago – I wrote about it – it was rather amateurish. But since then we get E mails on ongoing events, and links to petitions furthering the progressive agenda. I think Move On has also shared our E mails because the influx of stuff is really large. I now delete most all except those I think might have a petition I am willing to sign (and share on Facebook).

They all ask for money. Each week brings 8 to 10 requests. Last week I wrote checks for our bills and added up $25 for each worthy cause and it came to over $300. And next week I’ll have 8 to 10 more. So I’ll have to say no en masse and stop feeling guilty about it.

There is, of course, the knowledge that my measly $25 doesn’t stand a chance when millions of dollars from corporate donors are pouring in to the war chests of the Republicans. We have to find a better way of running our election process.

Meanwhile, Montana, which has a history of being dominated by corporations that ran the state years ago, employed almost all its residents, sold them their food at the company store, at high prices, and kept them in debt, doesn’t want any part of the Citizens United decision and has refused to use it. Several Montana corporations are suing to get them to comply. The Supreme Court is considering their suit.

With all the blether about states’ rights comes the realization that corruption at the local level runs unchecked when one party dominates. Thus it is that Republican-dominated legislatures in red states are disenfranchising voters, passing laws against women’s rights and pay equity, and destroying the unions, as happened in Wisconsin. (I am sick that the recall of Scott Walker did not succeed. Wisconsin voters must be truly uninformed.)

My dream for the election process would be to stop all contributions and to have equal government subsidies and air time offered as a public service by our news organizations – the same for all. This would put an end to the insanity and corrupted results brought on by the Citizens United decision.

I know every dime counts when giving to campaign requests, but I'm beginning to think it's money "down a rat hole". I'm just saying "NO" all year.

I wonder how many Wisconsinites voted for Scott Walker just because they didn't like the idea that so many out-of-state union people were coming in to tell them how to run their state.

But much bigger out of state money was coming in to oppose the unions and to support Walker. Did they just see one side? In any case, I know unions got to the point where they were too big, and also corrupt, but the bottom line is we need corporations and we need unions and they should balance each other out. The problem is when one side has too much power.

"My dream for the election process..." Mine is to adapt the English system--ONLY 6 weeks of campaigning before the election takes place!

But big money can take over even within a short time frame. Unchecked contributions from multinational corporations, unidentified, must be stopped. I think even the Supreme Court is recognizing that it made a horrible decision.

Power to you Teal. I showed my saved and contributed to picture of the
President and Bo, then I got one of Michelle. My contributions are small
but small ones add up. I am sending them all my contributions and for now
the dogs and cats have to wait until after the election.

I followed the Walker recall on fb and I know full well that I wasn't getting a balanced picture, but even so, the result was amazing. The few interviews I did see (carefully selected by producers) did suggest that voters were uninformed and complacent. I must admit that I'm not a fan of unions, although they did serve a useful purpose in their day--before major corruption--but even that wasn't the issue in Wisconsin.. I agree that the election system needs a major overhaul. The right is trying to make Romney look respectable now that they are stuck with him, but they don't seem to get that it's not about his money--they all have money--it's about how he lives with his money, so to speak. Can't imagine that schmutz as president....

Yes, unions got too big and as I say elsewhere, we need unions to balance corporate power to give workers a voice. Also, we are reaping in the work place the benefits of what the unions did when they started -- a 35-hour work week, coffee and lunch breaks, paid vacations, a minimum wage. You may not work in a union company, but you are getting union breaks. The answer is not to deny workers a grievance process but to prevent abuse of the system. What is sickening is that Walker is now a Republican "star" and will probably be emulated and escalate his repressive policies because he believes he is on the rise. Wisconsin voters really shot themselves in the foot on this one.
