Money in Politics
I am overwhelmed with E mail and behind in reading posts. Every day I delete stuff and the count stays at over 400 and it doesn’t go down.
Ed and I went to a Move On organization meeting (Democrats) some time ago – I wrote about it – it was rather amateurish. But since then we get E mails on ongoing events, and links to petitions furthering the progressive agenda. I think Move On has also shared our E mails because the influx of stuff is really large. I now delete most all except those I think might have a petition I am willing to sign (and share on Facebook).
They all ask for money. Each week brings 8 to 10 requests. Last week I wrote checks for our bills and added up $25 for each worthy cause and it came to over $300. And next week I’ll have 8 to 10 more. So I’ll have to say no en masse and stop feeling guilty about it.
There is, of course, the knowledge that my measly $25 doesn’t stand a chance when millions of dollars from corporate donors are pouring in to the war chests of the Republicans. We have to find a better way of running our election process.
Meanwhile, Montana, which has a history of being dominated by corporations that ran the state years ago, employed almost all its residents, sold them their food at the company store, at high prices, and kept them in debt, doesn’t want any part of the Citizens United decision and has refused to use it. Several Montana corporations are suing to get them to comply. The Supreme Court is considering their suit.
With all the blether about states’ rights comes the realization that corruption at the local level runs unchecked when one party dominates. Thus it is that Republican-dominated legislatures in red states are disenfranchising voters, passing laws against women’s rights and pay equity, and destroying the unions, as happened in Wisconsin. (I am sick that the recall of Scott Walker did not succeed. Wisconsin voters must be truly uninformed.)
My dream for the election process would be to stop all contributions and to have equal government subsidies and air time offered as a public service by our news organizations – the same for all. This would put an end to the insanity and corrupted results brought on by the Citizens United decision.
