The Kitchen Nightmare Ends

Our dishwasher was waiting for a part to come in, and I was washing dishes in the spare bathroom because we also had a major pipe blockage. It was gross -- the double sinks weren't draining at all, were filled with yucky water and residue. Our plumber had disappeared and his clerk said he had “told us what to do”, but he hadn’t given me a referral, so I thought he was just expressing an opinion. He didn't say, I can't help you, I'm not coming back.

The clerk gave me a number for The Plumber’s Plumber. They came, worked from the clean-out on the side of the house, inserted a camera, and cleaned out the clog. Told me to never use Liquid Plumber again and to just periodically fill the sink with water and Dawn liquid, and let that drain. Sounds too simple but that’s what they said.

So I was then able to wash dishes in the sinks since the dishwasher was still out. The Bill Smith Appliance repair unit thought they were finished when they replaced the damaged hose, but they hadn’t bolted the unit down. And they couldn’t run a test because of the clog. The guy said I didn't need to have it bolted, and I am thinking that was stupid, since the unit would vibrate out of its space in no time. Ed called the guy’s boss and was specific and, trust me, you don’t want Ed to get angry with you. The manager re-thought his casual position and said he would send us his topnotch repair team, and they came at 6 p.m. Saturday, as a special favor to their boss. They were very competent and even shored up the underside so that the unit would no longer tilt forward (and allow the drawers to roll out). So, finally it’s all done and I can have a clean kitchen. I promise never to complain again. (Well, we’ll see.)

Once every two weeks I fill sinks and add strong detergent (I use a cheaper one than DAWN) and unplug so it drains quickly. Then I wait about a half hour and pour a couple cups of bleach down the drains, followed by hot water.

Dish liquid and HOT water makes sense. It won't dissolve hair, but it'll suck the grease off the inside of the pipe.

What a relief. To me, having to do dishes in the bathroom is a low point, and I keep telling myself should I find myself in that position, I will not put up with it. So I'm glad you didn't either.

Good job Ed. I have heard of putting liquid soap like Dawn in the sink and even the toilet sometimes to help it.

Great. I am happy for you. It is awful to have to struggle with
incompetant people.
