Heart Attack Tip

Here's some info from a friend -- it could save your life.

Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. and you're driving home
(alone of course), after an usually hard day on the job.
You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home.
Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to get there in time.

What can you do?

You've been trained in CPR but the guy that taught the course didn't tell you what to do if it happened to you. Many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack. Without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

YOU CAN MAINTAIN CONSCIOUSNESS AND HELP YOUR HEART BY COUGHING REPEATEDLY AND VIGOROUSLY. A DEEP BREATH SHOULD BE TAKEN BEFORE EACH COUGH AND THE COUGH SHOULD BE DEEP AND PROLONGED, AS WHEN PRODUCING SPUTUM FROM DEEP INSIDE THE CHEST. A BREATH AND A COUGH MUST BE REPEATED ABOUT EVERY TWO SECONDS WITHOUT LET UP UNTIL HELP ARRIVES, OR UNTIL THE HEART IS FELT TO BE BEATING NORMALLY AGAIN.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and Keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
************

And I will add, if you think you are at risk, keep aspirin handy. It keeps the blood from clotting.

Spread the info -- it could save lives.

xx, Teal

We should all carry aspirin in our cars and purses. Thanks to both T&Ts.

I've heard about taking many short breaths, but not the coughing remedy. Good advice. Thanks. One never knows. Living alone has its drawbacks.

You really should read this: https://www.snopes.com/medical/homecure/coughcpr.asp

Apparently the cough thing could work under supervision by a medical professional, but it can be more dangerous than life-saving for most people: there is more to it than can be taught in an email, and you have to know what kind of heart attack you're having.

The American Heart Assn says:
"The best strategy is to be aware of the early warning signs for heart attack and cardiac arrest and respond to them by calling 9-1-1. If you're driving alone and you start having severe chest pain or discomfort that starts to spread into your arm and up into your jaw (the scenario presented in the Internet article), pull over and flag down another motorist for help or phone 9-1-1 on your mobile phone."

Taking aspirin is very important - 325 mg at the onset of chest pain. Chew it so it disperses faster.
