Desperate

We had storms yesterday. When they were over, Max, who loves the pool deck, used the pet door and went out.

When I was closing up the house for the night, I couldn’t find him. I always locate all cats before going to bed. I put some clothes on and went out on to the deck to get a better look and I saw that the pool cage door on one side had been locked into a wide-open position.

The last time a door was left ajar, Max went adventuring but came back right away. This time, there was no sign of him hours later. I left both pool doors open to give him access and searched the neighborhood with no luck.

Ed thought he might have been stolen. We also suspected mischief because of the hate that is coming my way.

I could not sleep, stayed on the computer, wrote the events to that point, and I couldn't stop crying. There have been incidents where some sick people actually throw pets into a canal.

I told Ed we should keep both pool cage doors wide open to give him access. I went to bed with my meditation tape, and when it was done, I was still wide awake. I lay there trying to convince myself I could sleep and started crying again and then I heard a bump from the pool area. I got up -- it was now 4:30 a.m. --and went out. I saw a dark shape in the gloom and it was Max. The little bugger had been out 6 hours and if he heard my pathetic calls to him, he ignored them. If I weren't so relieved I'd strangle him.

I had printed out 100 fliers that I planned to distribute this morning. I am wrung out, sleep deprived and coming down off monumental crisis mode.

It is very possible that someone deliberately propped open the pool cage door to give me grief because a human hand has to move the hinge that keeps it open. Would the wind do that? Ed says not possible.

It is now 5:30 a.m. and I am going back to bed. I'm sure Saturday will be shot, but my cat is safe. And I still feel like crying.

xx, Teal

I can imagine the hours you spent. And isn't it funny how your hearing is attuned to pick out that very slight noise of him coming back? My dog ran away to explore years ago, was found by a couple who apparently were trying to keep him, but he ran away from them and came home. I woke in the middle of the night on the 3rd floor, because I heard him just breathing or sighing on the front porch, where he was lying against the front door. He didn't bark or whine.
Meter readers leave open gates they had no business opening, too. Maybe the pet door should be blocked unless you're able to follow him outside to watch him?

You're right about that sixth sense. I heard a thump and I was up like a shot. What we will do is get dead bolts for the cage doors. I will then have to remember to open the door the pool cleaning guy uses, and lock it after. Monitoring this peripatetic cat is exhausting. He's in and out like a Yo-Yo. Ed thinks that anything might have happened, including getting cat-napped and then let go. We'll never know. I do know I covered a 6 block area calling his name and if he was in earshot, he was ignoring me. No telling what a cat will do.

My mom was told by a neighbor that he knew who took her very special cat, Smokey, when he noticed her scouring the alley behind her house looking for him. She knocked on that door, they denied having Smokey but when the cat heard her voice, he jumped out of a hiding place right into her arms. I love that story. My mom gave this guy the evil eye and stalked out.

Is there a way to lock that door? Max is probably all proud of himself: toured the neighborhood, saw the sights, came home for a snack and to use the litter box.

Yeah, or he could have been taken, then let go. We will get dead bolts for the doors. See reply to drmaus.

Six hrs is a long time for an outing... I'm glad he made it home.

That's what had me so worried. He was only gone an hour the first time he went walkabout. Little mugger.

Cats love the great outdoors but it is not always safe for them. I hope it was not malice.

After getting that hate letter from Don's anonymous friend, I am not at all hopeful that I am not going to be a target again. But please, my kitties have to be off limits. What kind of person would do this? They call themselves churchgoers and righteous. I can't think of a single liberal-minded person who would do this.
